So I’ve been using LayOut for a while now and I always use the same template that I set up a few years ago. It uses an Adobe font which is saved to my Mac font book and the text box style is saved within my template.
For some reason, recently, when I’ve opened a new template and gone to edit a text box or label, the text just changes itself to now have spacing between each letter (kern). I’ve attached a screenshot of what the font should look like vs what it has started doing.
The way I seem to fix it is by going to Text > Kern > Use Default. This sets the selected text box back to where I want it. This only applies to a selected text box and not all text boxes & labels across the document so I have to manually change each one back.
I don’t really understand why it is doing it in the first place as I’ve never had my text set up like this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It is really starting to annoy me!
Does this happen every time you open the template? What happens if you reset the kerning to Default and then save it as a new template? Does the text show this same thing the next time you open the new template?
Yes, every time I open the template. I’ve tried resetting all text boxes and then go to type and it changes. I’ve also tried saving a new template and that hasn’t worked either.
I’ve attached a screen recording below to show how the text boxes are acting.
OK. What happens if you remove the text box altogether and insert a new one?
FWIW, all of those text fields could be set up as Auto Text. you could then edit them in Document Setup>Auot Text instead of double clicking into each text box.
As I was typing my reply, I decided to start a brand new document, and rebuild my template. It looks to be working (don’t know why I didn’t try this already!), so I will go with this!
But for interest I have my reply and template below, if you did want to take a look.
Thanks for your help

I just tried using a standard font and the same thing happened!
It would be great if you could take a look. I’ve set the font to Arial.
Good deal. Making a brand new template was going to be my next suggestion. I’ve seen a few cases where other odd behaviors showed up with templates created in older LO versions on Mac but yours is the first I’ve seen with this kerning issue.
I’ll take a look. I may or may not see anything. Text handling on Windows is different than on Mac so that can either create or hide problems.
True that. And maybe a good time to add features like the Auto Text stuff.
That didn’t take long. So this is what I see upon opening your file. Extra kerning in the word “Project”. There’s no control over kerning in LO on Windows, though. That’s supplied by the Mac OS.
That’s interesting. I left the word ‘project’ with the kerning in hopes you could see what I meant but I had anticipated the other text boxes would also show this once edited!
Must be a weird Mac glitch or like you say, something weird is in the air!
Sorry, chiming in late. I don’t have https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/circe on my machine, and perhaps there’s a font substitution thing going on? But you’re right on updating Templates - we’re trying to get better ourselves at updating Templates & Scrapbooks that are old versions. We haven’t nailed down why this can happen, but we’ve seen some cases where it does happen.
