I’m trying to use the label tool to get face areas, even when I click from a shape on the same layer there is no drop down blue arrow, just ’ Label Text ’

Can you share the LO file so we can see what you are working with?
FWIW I can induce that behavior by placing a shape between the model and the label. In this case I have a rectangle with transparent fill over part of the SketchUp viewport. The Label is anchoring to the fill of the rectangle, not to the model below.
Below, I’ve turned off the fill in the rectangle and was then able to anchor the label to the geometry in the model viewport.
I suspect it has to do with the label you are using.
When you attach a label to an object you have the choice of displaying the Face Area or the Volume … your choice.
This is a simple example … two 12" cubes.
And here is the SketchUp model and the LayOut template:

Notice … two labels … one is a Volume label … the other a Face Area label.
And if were to you place a 2D surface over one face of the object … and then select that surface … obviously you will only get the Face Area label.
