Layout Freezing

I have just updated to 2025 version of layout and it freezes every time I try to Hybrid. I’m working on a simple floor plan with a few 3d warehouse items in there. It also freezes on other simple operations like changing line thickness and removing background etc. I’m on a Mac and have recently upgraded the operating system to the latest version. My activity monitor says Layout’s energy impact is 4,500 whereas Sketchup is only 0.5. Not sure if this is relevant… Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Need help :frowning:

Define “simple”. Define “a few”. See what the ModelInfo>Statistics window says when the “Show nested components” box is ticked. If the edge/face count is in the millions, there is no way you can use Vector or Hybrid rendering in LayOut. If you absolutely need that kind of output, keep your viewports at Raster and use the Output Override, and wait.

I have the exact same issue, before the update no problems and now I can’t get any dimension in, the first point sure then wait 2 minutes and just hope you haven’t moved your mouse - completely unworkable.
I have gtx 4080 super, Processor Intel(R) Core™ i7-14700KF, 3400 Mhz, 20 Core(s), 28 Logical Processor(s), Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 128 GB

I don’t know what to do, I’m unable to do my job like this, should I downgrade or am I overlooking something?

Update of what? SketchUp/LayOut? Or a Windows update?

Share the LO file so we can see if there’s something else you can do.

I’m having the same problem with LO 24. It stops responding doing anything. I have Sketchup Studio and I’m very disappointed with this issue. I’ve yet to see any indication that Trimble is even working on the issues posted here. Did I miss something?

There are things that can be done to improve this. Share your LO file so we can see what you’ve got set up.

Please also update your forum profile. It says you are using “Free Plan” SketchUp 2017.

Since you have SketchUp 2024 you must have a current subscription. You could update to SketchUp/LayOut 2025. There have been some speed improvements in LayOut 2025.

I think I got the profile updated.

Looks like it. Probably the Save button at the bottom was the problem earlier?

So back to your issue of LayOut freezing. Share the LO file so we can see what you’ve got and give you some ideas to deal with the slow performance.

Unfortunately, I’m doing a patent application images and can’t share the LO file. I will try to recreate the problem with a previous file.

You could share your file privately. I won’t share it with anyone else.

This implies that the viewport is waiting for rendering. Maybe you have Auto render turned off or other viewports are being rendered. Long render times occur with Hybrid and Vector rendering modes and when there’s a lot of edges in the model and/or very large textures.

Share your LayOut file so we can see what you are working with.

What does your screenshot have to do with this topic? What is the screenshot from? You shouldn’t be sharing your username and password for anything in a forum.

Sorry about that last post, I meant to post the screenshot of my error, not my login info

I will try to upload the LO file. I hope I get it correct.

I actually cannot send the file as I keep getting a prompt saying that the file is too big even though I have zipped it. How can I send this to you? Thanks for your hel

Upload it to DropBox and share the link.

This should be the Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/t/tN479PwoIFKCK5TW

OK. Looking at your SketchUp and LayOut files now. All the viewports are rendered as Raster which should improve speed. It’ll also show the sketchy edges style you’ve selected. Are you seeing a slowdown with the viewports rendered as Raster or is it when you switch to Vector or Hybrid? I see the model has a large number of edges.which would impact render times for Vector and Hybrid.

Although it wouldn’t have anything to do with rendering/update times in LayOut, I fixed incorrect tag usage. Not too bad compared to many I see but you should stay on top of that.

Yes, it seems that I can do only or two things to the viewports then they stop reacting and freeze. Also, the plans do NOT stay in scale, at least they seem to get larger, or smaller when I adjust the viewport sizes.

I am viewing in Raster, as you note. but I still seem to get freezing of my viewports.

Thanks for your help to date! Very, very helpful. Hopefully I can get this straightened out very soon.

I updated the reference in your LO file after doing some cleanup and all of the viewports rendered in about 10 seconds. This is on a PC with an Nvidia graphics card. It’s possible that some of the slow down is related to your hardware.

Is it possible that you hadn’t selected a scale yet? If you don’t manually select a scale the scale will change as you drag the edges of the viewport. You aren’t double clicking into the viewports to adjust the viewport are you?

Out of curiosity does this file behave any better for you?

Yes, it does perform much, much better now. And yes, I had chosen scales for all the plans in viewports. That is always one of the first things I do so I can place them correctly. Not sure what was going on, but it is not happening now, thanks to whatever you did.

Thanks a bunch,

Teri

I’m glad to hear it’s performing better. I ran CleanUp3 on your model a few times. It merged a lot of faces and removed coplanar edges. It also merged some materials.

I guess I can’t say why you were seeing the changing scale unless you were double clicking into the viewports which I strongly recommend against doing.
