Layout is taking upwards of 10 minutes to update references and has been crashing 3 or 4 times when I try to open the file and update it. It takes a long time to insert the model. I get a blank model box with the yellow triangle for minutes.
what is also happening is the Layout scene is not showing the same as the SU scene. In the Layout image, the ‘void’ is showing filled in in a few places but there is a void on the model. I can’t get this to show correctly.
I clicked on Update and it updated within a couple of seconds. I added a small rectangle to the .skp file and updated the reference. Again, it updated in seconds.
Where are you saving the .skp files for the project? According to the references list you’ve been working with the files saved directly to DropBox. Note that the path on my end for “metal pergola.skp” is to the file you shared and which lives in the same directory on my computer as the copy of the LayOut file.
Are you also working on the LayOut file while it is saved to DropBox?
Working with files that are saved directly to the cloud can be problematic. It can result in long update times. More worrying is that the files can become fatally corrupted which creates even more problems for you.
Thanks for your swift reply Dave. Do you get all the pages in the Layout document?
All my files are on Dropbox with local copies on my Mac.
I have been having a lot of issues with getting messages saying my system is running out of application memory, with SU often jumping up to over 60GB even with just one small SU file open. I have to close and quit, then it’s OK for a while but then suddenly goes back up . It feels like something is wrong but I can’t work it out.
Based on the paths shown in the References list, it doesn’t look like they are actually local. See the edit to my first reply. Bottom line is that you want the .skp and .layout files (as well as other references) to be really saved locally. Not to the cloud.
It might be that @colin has some insight on that issue. Do you have a lot of applications running?
BTW, I clicked the Purge button under the References list and several files were purged indicating they aren’t used in the document. That reduced the size of the LayOut file from 155Mb to 24.9Mb. That ought to help with performance a bit.
Oh! I did think it was a large file for a relatively small file!
so I moved them but put put them on my desktop and tried again, but then realised that the desktop is on iCloud!! so now I have moved them to my user account and am testing again, but currently it is still updating, so that is at least 10 mins and still going! I will do a purge and get back to you. But something isn’t right…
so I purged it and got the same result as you, the file size dropped significantly, but it has made no difference to the time to update it, currently 8 minutes and still updating. I think it’s because my Mac is too full. I need to clear it and see how it behaves. I have got some external hard drives so will move a load of files and see if that helps. Thanks as always for your help Dave x
I hope moving those files helps. Make sure you don’t have any unneeded applications running. Maybe before you test again, do a cold reboot of your computer. That is, entirely powered off and then back on. I would also suggest temporarily disconnecting from the internet to ensure there’s nothing going on between your computer and the outside world that might influence things.
I tried all your suggestions but it is still slow, maybe a little quicker. I’m on holiday next week so will do some clearing and moving of files to create more space on my Mac and see if that helps. Thanks Dave
I hope the cleaning helps. Your file isn’t really that large. Despite all the pierced panels the edge count isn’t so high that you would expect slow rendering. I hope cleaning things up will help.
Enjoy your holiday and don’t spend it all at your computer.
