Layout constantly crashes on closing file

Layout is working OK except that on closing a file the program crashes and closes all other open layout files. This happens 95% of the time. I have stopped sending crash reports because all they do is send me to the internet to look for fixes - none of which work. I use an Apple Studio with a M1 ultra processor and running Sequoia 15.6.1. I have just renewed my subscription and downloaded and reinstalled SketchUp + Layout version 25.0.659 but this hasn’t fixed the problem. Does anyone have any similar issues and more importantly how can i fix this.

It looks like quite a few people had the same crash as you, with LayOut 2025. Very few people have had that crash with LayOut 2026.

You don’t have to remove 2025 to be able to try 2026. Could you see if 2026 is better for you?

If there is a particular document that always crashes LayOut when you close it, can I get a copy of the file?

Dear Colin

Thought I was using 2026 but it appears not. Downloaded and installed and crashing at close of file does seem to have been fixed. Thank for your assistance.

I am also having the same problem, I have a 2025 minimac with up to date Tahoe 26.2 and latest updated 26 Sketchup/Layout Pro.

There is another issue I have seen lately, where closing LayOut can make it appear to lock up.

In your case, is LayOut locking up, and you eventually force quit, or does it crash instantly?

Colin, thank you so much for your reply. :folded_hands:

I haven’t used Layout for a few, (3), months, at which time it was working well, apart from the very odd crash which was most likely me pushing the boundaries.

This is what’s happening now;

  • Every time I close a file, Layout crashes instantly.
  • Sometimes when I’m updating a reference file, Layout locks up and after some time, I need to force quit.
  • Sometimes when I copy from another file and paste, Layout locks up and I need to force quit.
  • When I update my render from raster to either vector or hybrid, the render is a mess, parts of the model are transparent, in the wrong place and all is without profiles and edges. (I reset all viewports each time and same result0.
  • Sometimes render does not work at all…

Thank you again Colin for your assistance. Layout is a very important part of my work flow and I look forward to it working as it did.

Kind regards

Dobbin

I think that some of your cases are because the nature of your SketchUp models is demanding for LayOut. That would account for the times when LayOut locks up after changing a render mode or a reference. You could go into Settings, General, and uncheck the box that says to automatically render viewports. Then only manually render viewports when you are prepared for it to take some time! It would be interesting to try one of your documents that shows that problem.

For the instant crashing ones, I do see two crashes you sent in for LayOut 2025, and quite a few other people had the same kind of crash. I can’t see any of that type of crash for 2026. You might try using LayOut 2026, see if that is any better.

Share your LO file. Maybe there’s something that can be done to reduce the demands on your little Mac.

Although it is called a Mac mini, it is a fairly capable computer!

I didn’t mean it that way.

I know! Was making light of the phrase you used.

Once again thank you for your response. I was surprised to learn I had the crashes on Layout 25, I just discovered I had downloaded Layout 26 but had not changed the buttons on my dock…

I have since upgraded to the 26 and first use, it worked perfectly. Who would of thought it was that easy…haha

And @DaveR , Thank you for your assistance, I did have a good laugh at the term ‘little Mac’, I wil be referring it to that from now on.

Thank you gentlemen, problem solved.

Kind regards
