Layout 2025 on 2023 Mac Sequoia randomly loses parts of dimensions text

This has worked fine in the past and seems to be a bug new in Layout 2025.

  • Create a new Sketchup document
  • Save
  • Send To Layout
  • Add dimensions in Layout

  • Save > Close > Open
  • Dimension text partially missing. Specifically, it is text after a space in auto-generated dimensions (<>). Some dimensions always, some others in the same document never. Re-doing the broken ones does not fix it.

  • 4-click dimension text until it shows text box with “<>”
  • Click in background to close text box - correct text appears
  • Save > Close > Open
  • Dimension text partially missing again

Another example:

I have hundreds of dimensions in a regular document, so

  • is there a way to correct all faulty dimensions at once ? (EDIT: View>Render models in document shakes things up enough to correct all dimensions display, however, this only works until the document is saved and opened again, and also, I’d rather not have to tell my client this every time they freak out about my supposed sloppy work)
  • is there a way to avoid this nasty bug ?

Here is a test project with Sketchup and Layout files:

test.zip (3.6 MB)

Please open this in Layout 2025 and report if this looks correct (pic 1) or not (pic 2).

Thanks

@Barry should be able to reproduce this easily, and check whether it is a known issue.

I got the bad one.
The workaround is to Select All (cmd-A), any arrow key one step, arrow key one step back.
We are working on an issue related to this. I’ll test it with that version to see if it catches this case.

Yes, that does fix this example.

Yes, as does the mentioned View>Render models in document. However, none of these actually fix the underlying problem and it will pop up again next time the document is opened, so I can’t give it to a client.

  • Copying Style between working dimensions and non working ones does not fix it
  • Duplicating a page in the same document does not fix it
  • Copying page content to a new document does not fix it
  • Re-installing Sketchup or Layout does not fix it

At this time, I’m stopped dead in my tracks with deadlines approaching, so if this new version fixes this, will this version be released not ‘very soon’ but ‘immediately’ ?

You could install 2024 or 2023 to see if that behaves better untill it is fixed..

Thanks, I’m doing precisely this. However, I’m tightly integrated into a workflow with this and everyone being on 2025 is high on the list.

  • Installed the new Layout version today

  • Bug still there

  • Very disappointed
  • Drag Layout 2025 to the trash bin
  • Empty trash

I just tried this: note that your dimensions are right justified. Selected all dimensions in your page, then in the Dimensions Panel, left justify, then center justify them. I’ll file a bug and see why this is happening. Thnx for posting this.

Thanks for replying.

Change of justification does not improve anything here:

I’m sick of this.

In that case, what version are you on, and are you in classic or new graphics engine for LayOut?

b

Weird. Mine did the same, then I opened Preferences and it changed.
For a faster way - open your document, then command ,

If you read the thread from the top, my problem is not how to make the missing text show up, there may be a dozen ways to do that. My problem is that after closing and reopening the document the text is missing again. My client is furious about that.

If I switch from classic to the “new and improved” graphics engine (which claims to be worse, which is true, I get jagged lines now), the text is still missing.

And as I already wrote in the post this morning, the Layout version that I downloaded and installed today is 25.0.659

Does it show in the exported PDF?

No, it does not. And as I wrote above, this is a tightly integrated workflow, so my client needs the actual Layout document to work on.

Understood.

Explain to them that it doesn’t affect output?

I see text jumping around often, but I don’t have to explain to my client that it is fine when exported.

If they need LayOut to look better, make sure that in Document Setup, you’ve set Rendering->Display to high. It’s not by default.

From our side: we need to continue to decrease the document to final product differences. I’m sure this thread will help in that discussion to do better. Thanks.

I meant to imply that the missing text does not show in the export. It is still missing. But anyway, how, for instance, could anyone proofread a 50 pages document when half of the dimensions are faulty. I’m not going to teach my client how to work around bugs in Layout.

I do. But it does not help my problem.

Fair, but I find proofing of documents and markup much much easier and faster in PDF with a markup program. I tend to do it on iPad with my pencil.

But you have a dedicated workflow that is broken, so you need what you need.

Exactly. It’s obviously a bug and the burden lies on the developers to fix it.

I find that pretty ironic, for a software of this name…
