Layout 2025 crashes on SU file update

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have just installed SU 2025 and I am finding that when I go to update an SU embedded drawing, LO often crashes. No obvious reason.

I’ve been using 25 since it was released and had no problems until yesterday.

Layout became sluggish on one particular model for no obvious reason - it wasn’t a large file, there were no large textures, only one sketchup material and I had no Warehouse entourage to bloat it.

I closed layout, reopened and it was still behaving oddly.
Shut PC down and tried again. Still sluggish.
Then it crashed.

And then I had an error message from my Nvidia Control Panel.
Unfortunately I don’t remember exactly what it said other than there was a graphic issue.

So I opened the Sketchup model and switched to the classic graphics engine.
Since then the Layout file has been working fine. No more crashes and no longer sluggish.

Might be a similar problem for you? Failing that, maybe upload the file or share it so someone can have a look at it for you.

Thanks to both of you for having an update profile. You’re Win and @simoncbevans is Mac. I don’t see crashes under either email for LayOut 2025. If you can share a file, a crash #? We have fixed some crashes on model updates in 2025.0.2, and you can also 1. Turn off Auto rendering. 2. Only re-render models individually or on a single page instead of all models. 3. Work in lower resolution raster for development before going to higher resolutions and/or hybrid or vector on output.

The last on is for the case that on Mac, we’re investigating a memory-limiting bug.

I had similar problems on a win11 machine yesterday…
Today on another win 11 machine, no problem.
The difference? On yesterday’s one the su25 was the very latest build, today’s was the initial su25 official release.

I am having a really similar problem. I was working on a 2017 Mac without a lot of space so I thought that was the problem… I purchased a 2022 Mac with the M2 and updated to the most current OS. SU Layout is working pretty good but whenever I try to update and relink the references, it lags forever and then crashes. It’s making want to return my expensive new computer and go back to my old one if it’s a Layout problem not Mac problem? What should I do?

It could be a file problem.

Yes - LO 2025 crashes repeatedly on all my files - without warning and usually when updated a sketch-up window or closing the file down.

This has been going on almost since I upgraded to 2025. This is happening to all of us in our studio.

I send in a crash report - though only just recently started doing this every time it happens.

This is really time consuming and has meant rework in some cases where the document was not auto saved since the last changes were made.

Please help!

If you are getting bugsplats and are submitting them, one of our staff members may be able to dig in to the crash reporting system and see if we can narrow down the cause of the issue. Of course we will need the number associated with the bugsplat to do the lookup so let us know the number associated with the report so we can do the lookup. If you do not have the number handy, try and trigger it again and make sure to record the number somewhere so we can look it up. Once you have a number for me I can message the rest of the team.

I found the bugsplats you sent in, thanks for those. They all were the same crash, and seem to be something to do with a problem in the geometry in the model.

Are you able to try SketchUp 2026, in the hope the problem is already fixed there? Or, can I try your model, and see if I can narrow down what part is causing the crash?

Hi Colin

I will try 2026 - had not realised this had been released.

Given that LO crashes and so does SKUP at times in many different files - not just due to the geometry of this one document.

Thanks for getting back to me. Fingers crossed that 2026 works.

Be very careful upgrading to SU26. My problems with SU25 resolved themselves and I now look upon it as pretty stable. But SU 26, for me at least, is very much not. And I now have quite a lot of files in SU26 format which I guess I won’t be able to open with earlier versions (though I admit I haven’t tried). My recommendation would be to go on saving files in a format that you know to be stable until you are confident that SU26 will play nicely for you. Other than that, it may be a question of waiting until updates sort the teething problems out.

Your guess is wrong. You will be able to open it in all supported versions. (Down until version 2023)

Good to know (and some relief!). I’ll give it a go.
