Hi, I’m getting back into Sketchup after a 15 year hiatus Using the Pro version. Working off of an imported dwg file of the lot and home footprint so I can apply landscape design with proper existing structure / hardscape orientation and simulate lighting. Not even to the 3d point yet…just trying to set up the 2d parts successfully. I’m running into a few issues that I’m thinking are all related to the fact that I’m building on top of someone else’s 2d file. Halp!
I have assigned all the pre-existing elements to tags. Deleted a bunch of elements I didn’t need like utilities, existing trees, topo, setbacks, etc. Despite this, whenever I go to change the line weight via profile in styles for just those elements selected in one tag, the line weight change is applied to ALL tags. Looking in entity info, none of my lines appear to belong to multiple tags and can’t even select just one line and change its style without impacting all. Why?
All the lines for the building footprint (Footprint tag) appear to intersect properly and yet they are not creating a face. How can I fix this? Tried using the Weld extension to maybe not have so many lines but that didn’t help.
Sometimes when I do create a new face, it’s interrupted by element(s) belonging to a tag I’ve turned off. So it’s an incomplete face…any way to get around this?
Tags, like Layers in older versions of SketchUp are to be given to groups and components, not to the edges and faces in the model. Tags do not provide separation or prevent geometry from merging like layers do in some other programs.
I’ve fixed the incorrect tag usage in your model here.
Tracing edges with the Line tool or in some cases connecting corners should create faces as long as the edges all form closed planar loops.
If you cannot get a face to form there’s like a gap or a fork in the loop. Here I started trying to create a face for what I gather is a wall. Even with the long diagonal I only got the triangular face because there’s a gap in the edge near the cursor. I would delete the edges on either side of that gap and draw a new single edge in to replace them.
@DaveR Thank you so much! The videos are helpful as well. Ok good to know that it’s not necessarily the tags preventing isolation of style edits. Are you implying that if I were to create groups or components, I might be able to successfully isolate style edits?
Can you elaborate on what was incorrect about the tag usage? I’m not following the significance of the first screen shot mentioning 12967 edges and 1 faces.
Fair point on the axes - will work to move. Should be fairly easy.
Can you attach your version of the file with your edits?
Tags absolutely do not provide separation of geometry nor do they prevent geometry from merging. You must use groups or components for that. If you want to choose different dash styles for the edges, first create the groups or components to contain the geometry. Then give those groups/components tags and set the desired dash style for each tag.
ALL edges and faces in the model should be untagged. Tags are only to be given to groups and components. The numbers I showed indicate the number of edges that are tagged in your model and had their tags removed. And the one face that was also tagged was set to Untagged, too.
Here is the file. Note there are no tags in the file because they were purged after the tag usage was corrected. I fixed the one gap I mentioned and there are a few faces created. Soriano Yard 2D New Layers 10.6.941am.skp (477.5 KB)
