I’m working with a fairly large .e57 file (50 GB), and I"m noticing that there seems to be a bunch of points missing within the interior of the building. I downloaded a trial version of Recap Pro, and using the same .e57 file, there is way more detail visible. Is this a known issue, or are there some import settings for Scan Essentials I’m missing?
You can download a 14 day trial version of the Undet plugin, which is the plugin I use to see if all the points show up. Alternatively, if you let me have a link to your point cloud I will have a look for you. Undet allows you to change the threshold settings to determine when it loads all, or just some of the points. I would imagine if you load every point from a 50GB file your model will be pretty slugish, but you can crop certain areas so that all the points show up within that area and the extent of the crop required will depend on your settings. Very often if you view an entire point cloud you will effectively be looking at a draft version of it, but if you crop to a specific area of the cloud, the full resolution is displayed.
The Undet trial is available at undet.com, then you can have a play with these settings
Thanks so much for the reponse, Kevin. I will give Undet a try. I also tried getting very granular with the clipping box, i.e. instead of including most of the building, just clipping to a smaller area (e.g. 1000 sq ft). This actually made a huge difference, and is likely the cause of all of my problems. I will make sure to do this going forward. Thanks again!
You have a setting to show less intensity of points. Could it be your problem?
Another problem could be that the point cloud is far from the origin… If so try to insert it at 0,0,0
Let us know how you get on Markus. It will be interesting to hear. It always surprises me just how much detail there is in a point cloud when it’s displayed at full resolution.
The 2 images below show the same area, where the top image is part of the entire point cloud and the lower image is within a clipping box.
I once used an exterior scan of a very large building to check its Archicad model. Someone had lost a ballpoint pen on a footpath outside. I just couldn’t read the manufacturer’s logo on the clip but the model was very familiar. And I just wanted to check the main dimensions.
