Issue with exported eps file from sketchup pro 2022 on PC

insulated_wall_section.eps (6.2 KB)
I exported a simple 2-d graphic using the .eps format and the dimensions outside the body of the object are in a black region. I included both the original .eps file and a version converted (by Irfanview) to .jpg. Is there an issue with the eps writer in sketchup? I have also tried exporting from sketchup directly to .jpg, .png, and .emf. When I scale these formats within my word processing program to better fit the page, the quality of the text on the image is very poor. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Ben,

Long time no chat. I expect what you are seeing is that outside the model space you have transparency and in the application you are using to open the eps file, the background is black. What happens if you draw a larger rectangle behind the dimensions before making the eps export? Or can you change the background color to white in the application you’re using to view the eps?

What’s your end goal for this?

Dave: Thanks for your reply. I think the issue may be with viewing with Irfanview the eps exported from SketchUp, Irfanview does not view the file correctly. I went online and viewed the eps file at a site called Junpshare, everything looked fine. I use Irfanview to crop my eps image so that it better fits into my word processor (Scientific Workplace, a front end for LaTex). The other formats I tried (jpg, png, and emf) produced poor quality results for the cropped image when I then scale the image inside Scientific Workplace.
The end goal is to have the image exported from SketchUp as part of a document I am preparing. As I rethink the problem, I suspect it may not be a SketchUp problem.

Thanks

Well, it’s good that the info is present in the export.

Is there a reason you aren’t using LayOut?

Do you know that an eps or pdf file exported from SketchUp is a pure vector graphic file. Instead of IrfanView (a lovely app, btw) I would use an illustration application (Inkscape is a free alternatve to Illustrator or CorelDraw) to edit it.

Dave
The SketchUp part of this task is trivial as you can see. It was just a convenient tool to generate the graphics image. The end product is a document that has a lot of math equations so I do not see how LayOut would help my situation. This is from a person that has never used LayOut as my needs are those of a woodworking hobbyist that likes to make drawings before sawdust.

I am not a graphics expert, just a user of the technology. I had long since forgotten the differences between raster and vector formats. Your post prompted me to re-read about the differences between the two formats. I had noticed that while Irfanview would open an eps file, you could crop it but not save as another eps file. I had learned years ago that eps files gave me better quality graphics for the scientific computing work that I was doing. I now understand why. At some time in the past, I recall downloading Inkscape but never got very far up the learning curve. Thanks for your suggestions.
