Is there a plug-in ( or? ) that creates surfaces on curved geometry?

Imagine a skeleton of a boat with bulkheads but no skin, is there some trick way of generating the exterior as a surface?
Doesn’t have to look like planking a smooth fiberglass hull would be just dandy … any help here?
