Invisible components

I designed a cabinet with 3 front panels. The top panel has a cut out to place a tv behind it. Front 2 is suddenly invisable and I wonder what happened. First I modelled the panel Front 2 rotated it over red axes so it tiltes back wards. Then I made it a component. I copied it 3 times and placed the copies at the side placed them straight and made a scene for just the 3 copies. I needed this scene for Layout for technical drawings. Because Open Cut List did not recognise the thickness of the panel in a good way, coz of the tilt, I exploded 1 of the copies and made it a component with the same name again After the Sketchup warning that there was already a component with this name I clicked ok, so all existing components Front 2 followed the new settings, dimensions etc. But now Front 2 which is in the Cabinet, is invisible. When I select Scene Front 2, the 3 copies are visible, no problem. I made a copy of 1 of the visible copies and draged it into the cabinet group. It became invisible. See the 2 screen shots and look at image 2 where I selected the 2 invisable Front 2 components. See Outliner at the right side. Why are they invisible?

Sometimes that happens if the contents of the component or group have been hidden. In the View menu turn on Hidden Geometry. What do you see? Another possibility is that you’ve given a tag or tags to the contents of the component and they are turned off. If you share the .skp file it’ll be easier to give you an exact answer.

Are you still using SketchUp 2019 as your profile shows?

I work with Sketchup 2024. There are no hidden components, groups or geometry. The parts inside the Group Cabinet are not tagged. The Group Cabinet is tagged as cabinet.

Well, there’s still nothing in your description that would lead to a solution. Share the .skp file so we can take a look and help you out.

Thanks for updating your forum profile.

I uploaded the skp file.

So my guess about the contents of the component being given a tag and the tag being turned off was correct. The edges and faces in the component have been give the “Parts” tag.

All edges and faces in the model should be created and remain untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags. Here’s the result of fixing the incorrect tag usage.

Thanks Dave. I changed the settings in my original file and then indeed Front 2 shows up in the group. Changing the edge settings by tagging them Parts must have been a mistake. A lesson learned.

Yes. Don’t give tags to the geometry in your model. Make sure only groups and components get tags. Leave the geometry untagged and make sure Untagged remains active at all times.

Good luck going forward.
