Importing STP/STEP files

We often receive STP files from our suppliers and need to convert them into our SketchUp models. We’ve been using a plugin (SimLab STP importer), which is not ideal, so we would really like to have the import built directly into SketchUp.
As STP is a very common file type for file exchange between various CAD and modelling applications, it would make sense if it was one of the file formats that can be imported by SketchUp.

Agreed, would love to have STEP native import. I do this regularly and also use the SimLab importer. What parts are you finding difficult, perhaps we can compare workflows. I have other methods of import stp too (edit, one is universal importer that Dave mentions below.)

I use Universal Importer which is available from Sketchucation. It has worked well for .step files for me.

I use FreeCAD (it’s free ) to go from STP to other file types.

I always upload them to Trimble Connect, open them in the 3 D viewer, and than download them as .trb (TrimBim)

Those are imported in SketchUp.

Streamlining an extension for it:)
