Hallo can any one assist to open a stp file in sketch up ?
You must use a plugin or some other software to convert the .stp file. SimlabSoft sells a converter plugin. Rhinoceros can import a stp file and save it as a SketchUp model.
I’ve successfully used FreeCAD in the past for a conversion.
Have you tried drag and drop into your modeling space? Works for me.
The Universal Importer for SketchUp supports STP files.
Is this still true? If so, what is the process to accomplish an STP file import into SketchUp?
I cannot seem to get SketchUp Pro to recognize any STP files in the Import window.
If I try to open an STP file via File > Open, a pop up appears telling me “This does not appear to be a SketchUp model!”.
I have been able to open the STP in FreeCAD, export it as a Collada (.dae) and then import that into SketchUp successfully.
STP files are not supported by SketchUp natively which explains why you don’t see the file type in the Import window. And Open only opens.skp files. It is not supposed to open anything else.
As Jean indicated, you can try the Universal Importer extension from Sketchucation to import them. Or use another application to convert them to a file type SketchUp can import.
As an update to this…I have had tremendous success opening STP and STEP files in the free Autodesk Fusion 360 software.
After opening it in Fusion, they give you an option to export directly as a SketchUp file without having to save as a DAE or STL or other intermediate format and then use an Import extension within SketchUp. The resulting models are MUCH, MUCH better.
No insane amount of polygons and phantom triangles, just an accurate and reasonable model that works just fine in SketchUp.
Thanks mate! You solved my problem that was similar! Just dowloaded the Fusion and like you explaind it all went easy!
