Imported JPGs as Images Glitching

Hello there SketchUp Community,

I’m working on a project to recreate an 18th century room that featured Egyptian design motifs. One of the elements is a border that goes around the top of the room, which has figures of ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. I’ve imported the jpegs as images, placed on them on a face and resized. However, when I zoom in and out, the images “glitch” - disappearing and reappearing.

I’m using SketchUp in MS Edge, with a Pro account, and (as you can probably tell) am very new to this programme, so I’m hoping I’ve just missed something really obvious.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

What you show is called z-fighting. The image and the face of the wall are in the exact same location and your graphics card can’t tell which one should be in front. Either move the image slightly off the wall or import or explode the image so it becomes a texture.

Side note: You have exposed back faces in your window frames. You should correct those.

Hi DaveR, so effectively the images need to be “floating” off the surface? Ok, will give that okay, many thanks.

(I’ve also reversed the faces of the frames, thanks for pointing that out)

Yes, unless the images are used as a texture. Kind of the same thing as in real life. If you are hanging a picture on the wall it isn’t going to be in the wall.

What are you modeling? Is this your own house?

That’s helpful to think about, thank you.

The house, or rather the room, I’m modelling was originally built by Robert Adam (1728-1792) and decorated by Thomas Hope (1769-1831) when he purchased it. It was known as Duchess Street mansion when Hope lived there, but 20yrs after he died, the house was demolished. As part of a postgrad, I’m attempting to recreate at least one room (it was a massive house!), but using the 18th century architectural plans, which is challenging to say the least!
