I need help modeling a roof. Please help!:(

Hi everyone, I am new to sketchup and I really need some help with modeling this roof. This model is just for rendering. I know how to read plans but I am still learning about roofs and its terminology. I have looked up and watched so many tutorials but I am honestly just really confused. I used a plug in for the second floor roof. Right now I would really just like some help on the best method to model this roof. I am really trying to model the smaller left side (I attached a picture)I tried the follow me method, and modeling from the roof plan and then using the move tool. I have attached my model and the floor plan pdf. I really appreciate any one who is willing to help me out  I would also really appreciate a step by step. I am sorry in advance. I just really need help and would really like to learn.

First thing you need to clarify is why are you modelling the roof? That helps others, as your end purpose influences what method and level of detail is the best to achieve your goal!

Given the level of detail in your 2d construction set, I assume its not for construction? is it for interior fitout? rendering?, massing studies? shadow or view analysis, street context

I reorganised a copy of you file stacking the elements according to reference datum and grouping them by floors. I also created views and simplified the layer structure so you can isolate elements you want to work as needed. Note, I created a 2d tag to put all your reference 2d dwgs and locked them. Their visibility should be easy to control and the should never move.

Finally, look at the outliner to understand the data (model) structure. Each floor is a group, and the building components on that floor are tagged according to their type. This allows you to view by floor or by building element. using scene and tag combinations. Note that roofs are on multiple floors.

Your roof 2d seems scaled incorrectly, so I resized to reflect the lower floors, it also combines roofs on all levels which is confusing. I just separated the floors by 12’, you need to adjust vertically for your actual heights.

Hope that helps you understand one method of model organisation, as an unstructured model is a nightmare as the project develops..

Short answer: With native tools, you can use the Follow Me tool to make hipped roofs like that so long as the eave/soffit heights match. For different eave/soffit heights like that, make each one separately and then use solid tools to merge them.

Hi, thank you for organizing my file. I’m still learning so that was very helpful. This house is being modeled for renders only. Based on the files, can you let me help me out on the technique of modeling the roof please

I will look at it tomorrow for you.. in the interim, you can take 2d section dwgs, position the accurately with the 2d plans in your sketchup model and use them to reference building element heights.

ok, here are two approaches, Intersection faces or solid volumes, the latter is the best if you have access to those tools.

I tried the follow me tool and it didnt really work. I will try creating them as a solid and see if that works. Thank you!

Okay, thank you! I’m going to try again tonight and hopefully I can get something done.I appreciate your help!!

Hi all,

I’m currently working on modeling the first-floor roof in SketchUp, mainly for rendering purposes. Up to this point, I’ve been doing mostly mass modeling, so I’m still pretty new to detailed roof modeling.

Right now, I’m trying to model a sloped roof based on the plans, which indicate a 3:12 pitch. However, when I model it using that slope, it doesn’t visually match the elevations shown in the drawings.

I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding the pitch, setting the height incorrectly, approaching the geometry the wrong way, or reading the plans wrong. I’d really appreciate any guidance on what I might be doing wrong or the correct way to model this type of roof.

I have attached the model and plans. Also, I will probably need help modeling the left side of the roof as well so please any advise would really help me out.

Please do NOT double post!!
You allready made this one:

Hi, I have made a previous post but this is for a different question and issue. Which is why I thought it would be okay to post again.

Please don’t be rude. I am simply trying to learn

I don´t know the imperial system but I checked some dimensions and they don’t match.

I set the model just to inches cause I have no idea what the combined foot and fractions mean. ANyways the shower says 36” x 72” and the actual dimension is 43.2” x 86.3”. On the other thread someone told you that working with length snap activated will lead to some problems, but you still have it activated, length and angular snapping.

The Dimension issues you´re having are not entirely because of length snapping, Length snapping usually affect to small dimensions which you have as well, the problem you have is that you didn´t scaled properly the 2D drawings before starting to model.

@tweenulzeven was correct in their post. This is a question about the exact same model. I combined them. Keeping conversations in a single thread keeps our forum neat and it is far easier for us to help you when all information is in the same place.
