I have a license for sketchup pro 2021 and I just updated my iMac to Sequoia

Am I screwed? Sketchup and Layout are no longer working. Do I now have to by a subscription and get the new version of Sketchup? I was very happy with SU 2021. Or maybe I can downgrade my Mac OS?

thank you!

What is not working? there are some features that you can´t use anymore, like Warehouses and geolocation, but all the modeling tools should work on sketchup 2021 and all the tools of layout should work as well.

There are some known problems with old versions of Sketchup and newer MacOS versions, the materials window was one of them, it makes SketchUp crash. Since 2021 isn´t supported anymore, don´t expect this bugs to be fixed on your version, they´re already fixed with newer versions of SketchUp.

If you want or need to have access to all the features and to the ones that will be released in the future, yes you should buy a subscription license otherwise you can still use sketchup 2021 for as long as you wish. You shouldn´t upgrade to newer MacOS versions if you have a Mac machine with an M series SOC though, Sketchup 2021 runs under Roseta 2, a program that runs on the background that translates x86 to ARM, the last time apple transitioned from PowerPc to intel, they supported emulation for 6 years, it´s been 5 years since the transition from intel to ARM started.

What is not working: Both apps load, but I am unable to open existing files or open a new one. All ‘recent’ files are greyed out.

Ooops…seems to be back on board. I think it was just the new OS acting sluggish. App is crashing frequently though. I hope this isn’t chronic.

There are known issues with older versions of SketchUp and newer Mac OS versions. You may experience crashing. Downgrading the OS to a version that was supported by SketchUp 2021 would be one option to getting around it.

I want to load my classic license on a different computer. I can’t find access to the classic version anywhere on the trimble site-…any suggestions?

Thanks

Joe

Does it have an older operating system?

Presumably you have the installer on your Mac so you could just copy it to a USB stick and use it on the other computer.

Also look at this post.

Be aware that the web-based services haven’t supported SketchUp for quite a while now.

I looked for a classic license for your email address, and couldn’t find one. If you have a license of yours that might have had a different email address, send me a message with whatever details would help me to find the license.

Hi Dave,

The license is under my other email which is joeclark99@gmail.com.

I took your advice and just transferred the application from my 2019 iMac onto a flash drive, and loaded it onto my even older iMac, and it works fine so far, although I haven’t yet given it a real road test. But there are other problems associated with using the ancient High Sierra OS, which I need not go into. Additionally, the screen is smaller, resolution is poorer, and I can’t plug my second monitor in without an adapter (no USB C in old Mac).

Sketchup and Layout are really buggy and crashy on the newer Mac, and I don’t really like the other plan which would be to downgrade this newer iMac to the earlier OS. So it might be time to just buy a brand new Mac, but it seems crazy to do this as the hardware, screen, etc. are in perfect condition. Someone suggested buying a Mac Mini and hooking this up to the current iMac, and just using the screen? I worry that installing a second screen might not work with this arrangement…

Thanks for your feedback!

Joe

I doubt a new Mac Mini will come with anything but Sequoia. And not all iMacs can be used as screens - I thought about this with my 2019 iMac when I upgraded to the M2 Studio.

If you use TimeMachine you can roll back your OS without too much pain.

But I don’t understand why you will jump through all these hoops and even entertain buying a new machine instead of upgrading SketchUp? I get it ‘subscription bad’ … but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You won’t be able to copy a 2019 from another computer to a new computer, and get it to work, because you won’t be able to add the license. That’s because your 2019 was deactivated when you started using the 2020 version of the license. The 2020 license was deactivated when you started using the 2021 license.

You should be able to copy SketchUp 2021 from one computer to another computer, and when you run SketchUp on the new computer you would add the 2021 license.

I wasn’t clear in my references to the different licenses. I have been referring exclusively to my 2021 license. But anyway, I have another problem now… Sketchup and Layout now don’t function at all now on my newer (2019) iMac, soI’m trying to uninstall and reinstall my 2021 version of Sketchup and Layout, from the copy that I put on the flash drive. What is the procedure for this? I don’t see a .dmg file on it.

Thanks

Joe

Did you copy the.dmg file from the computer that has SketchUp installed on it? If not, what did you copy to the memory stick?

I copied the app file. Whatever is in the folder should be on flash drive.

Well, you need the .dmg to properly install it. Did you follow the link I gave you the other day?

that link sent me to a page that didn’t reference my 2021 classic license, only 2023 and 2024.

I appreciate your patience with me and my lack of technological savvy!

The link I provided yesterday here:

Goes to this post which included the download link for SketchUp 2021 for Mac.

The DMG Dave pointed to should solve the problem. If not, from the flash drive you can copy the SketchUp 2021 folder that includes SketchUp and LayOut, into the Applications folder of the new computer. Then go into that folder and open SketchUp.

Asked, answered and still…
