I have a group on top of a group?

It looks like I have one group directly on top of another. If I click on the grouped object to edit the group then when I click on a line another group appears on top of it. How can I get rid of one of them?

Also, if I click delete the group I see these other strange non-grouped lines that I must get rid of but how? If I delete them I cannot get back to the grouped object.

Explode the outer group then select and delete the stray geometry it contained.
