I can't get trim to work

I am using SketchUp Go on Windows.

I have two solid objects that cross. I want to trim object 1 so that it does not overlap object 2 and I want to delete the unwanted parts of object 1, leaving object 2 as is. I activated the solid trim tool, selected object 1, then object 2. I then selected object 1 and clicked delete. It removed all of object 1 that did not overlap object 2, leaving the small part that overlapped.

I tried again, selecting object 2 first, but that didn’t work either.

I’ve made this work before; I can’t imagine why it isn’t working now.

I can think of two things that might have gone wrong:

  • The first solid you select will be the “trimmer” and the second will be the one that gets trimmed. If you got this backward, you won’t get what you expected. I suggest that you activate ComponentEdit->hide rest of model and then open the two objects to see what you actually got before doing the delete. If the wrong one got trimmed, you did it backward.
  • Did you undo the first trim before doing the second operation? If not, you won’t get what you expected because you didn’t start with the original solids.

Did you edit the component to do this? I’m confused by why you are deleting whole objects.

Here is an image. Image 1 is the diagonal; image 2 is the vertical. Image 1 goes through the middle of image 2. I want to delete the parts of image 1 to the right of image 2.

This is what the instructions say:

How to Use the Trim Tool in SketchUp Go

  1. Select the Trim tool from the toolbar or press the shortcut key (default is T).

  2. Click the first solid — this will be the object you want to cut.

  3. Click the second solid — this will be the cutting object.

  4. SketchUp will create a new solid where the two solids intersect, and the original first solid will be trimmed to match the intersection

So I should click object 1, then object 2. The instructions don’t say to delete the unwanted parts, but they don’t go away on their own. Anyway, this is what I get.

Should I be using some other approach?

These instructions are wrong.

The mantra is, “Use this to trim that.”

trim

You cut the angled piece out of the vertical piece. If you don’t want this do the reverse. Then the angled piece will have a section missing. If you don’t want either part of what is left of the angled piece you will need to double click to edit the angled piece and select the geometry you do not want.

I have Go on windows also. The first things I did when I opened up your file was to to model info and turned off length snapping, went to the Styles menu-default styles and went to woodworking (I just visualize better in that mode.), and changed precision to 1/64". The screenshot shows what happened to the diagonal after I used the trim tool. It wasn’t in the edit context when I used the trim tool. I put it in the edit mode and clicked on hide rest of model in the display menu. To get rid of the part you don’t want, just triple click and press delete and that will leave the part you want.

Just to reiterate, trim does exactly what you ask, it trims out the part that overlaps and leaves the rest.
So you do the trim then edit trimmed object and remove the excess.

Another way would be to create a larger box to trim against that contains the full length of the parts you wish to trim.

Thank you! I was able to follow the steps you used and reproduce your results. I learned two things.

  1. I didn’t realize I had to double-click to edit the diagonal piece.
  2. I learned to click on the cutter first.

It’s done!
