I’m not able to cut a hole in my wall using push/pull. It says there is a limited offset, and when I ignore this it just keeps on pushing. It doesn’t show “on face”.
Someone knows how I can solve this?
Most likely the start and end faces aren’t parallel, or perhaps there is something in the way. If you share your model here, we can check.
the video helped, thank you!!

i am having this exact problem and have tried all 5 of these fixes. i cannot explode and fix no 5 - i select ‘intersect faces’ & ‘with selection’ - the pop up appears which says ’ no intersections found between selection set and rest of the model’
i would highly appreciate any assistance.
i out for a few hours but will check back later. thank you in advance.

The weird thing is that I got it to work when pushing from the other side… Hope this helps a bit.
Edit: I do however suspect it has something to do with the guides next to the hole.
That shouldn’t matter unless the guides are very slightly off the face of the wall, in which case you could snap to them instead of the wall and get pushpull slightly off axis. However, I haven’t been able to reproduce the problem.
just to let you know, i opened the group for the wall, drew the window rectangle onto the open wall group, pushed it through turning the wall around and selected the outdide wall - and WALA, IT SUDDLENLY WORKED, after battling all yesterday!!
thanks all. hopefully it becomes easier!!
You have everything grouped. You must open the group to be able to make a shape on a face/surface that you can push/pull through.
thank you, yes, had to open the group first.
The push/pull feature has been the MOST DIFFICULT tool for making holes for windows and doors! I’ve been using Sketchup for about 5 years and this feature has never improved and always buggy! It will randomly work and takes so many tries no matter how many videos I watch. Just read through some of these other postings and someone mentioned you have to ungroup a wall? Wow none of the tutorial videos mention that you have to ungroup a wall. I ungrouped it and it worked. But, why would we need to ungroup a wall?
Share a typical file that gives you problems. I’ve been using SketchUp for more than 20 years and have never had any buggy behavior with Push/Pull.
Well, I got it to work after reading that a wall cannot be grouped. I don’t see why it won’t work with a grouped wall if you are only selecting the face. But, whatever! Thanks for you offer
Evidently you misunderstood what you read. You can use Push/Pull on a wall that has been grouped but you must first open the group for editings. From your description it sounds like you didn’t have the group open for editing. One of the points of creating a group is to prevent the geometry within the group from being modified unless it has been opened for editing. This also prevents other geometry from merging with or otherwise changing the geometry within the group. This is a fundamental first or second lesson sort of thing in SketchUp. There is no need to explode (ungroup) the geometry before using Push/Pull to create an opening in a wall group.
So how do you open a group for editing? I thought if I just double clicked on it that would open it for editing.
Double clicking on it with the Select tool is one way of opening a group for editing. If the group is open for editing and you’ve actually drawn the rectangle on the face inside the group, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to use Push/Pull to push an opening for a window through the wall. If that’s not working there’s something else going on in your model that isn’t right. If it isn’t working for you share the model so we can see what you are dealing with.
BTW, are you still using SketchUp 2021 as your profile shows?
I am using 2024.
Please update your profile. And if you have trouble with Push/Pull or some other tool, share the .skp file so we can see exactly how you’ve set up the model. Generally there will be a logical solution.
You could benefit yourself by spending some time at The SketchUp Campus. This is a site that will provide the basics for learning the SketchUp modeling process. Also, spend some time at the SketchUp SketchUp YouTube site. It provides much information including how to use each tool.
Hi Cristine,
If you are having trouble opening a group for editing, it can be helpful to use the right-click menu and select “edit group”. On all versions, it’s the option right above “explode group”. The image below shows an ungrouped square drawn on a grouped cube-like object. You can see that the square’s surface is selected by the blue halftone pattern, but it sorta disappears into white—which means there are two overlapping planes—the square and the rectangle—which are not intersecting each-other.
When selecting a group, a blue lines will appear on all edges of the object, indicating that it is a closed group (red lines would mean it’s a locked group). If you want to use the shape you drew outside of the group inside of it, choose “copy” or “cut”.
Once the group is opened for editing, dashed lines will surround the perimeter of the object. You can “paste-in-place” your shape you created outside of the group and it will join the two objects to allow you to edit them with the push and pull tool. See screenshot below:
You should be able to select the face of the 3D object without the blue-halftone showing up inside the second shape, and vice-versa, indicating that the boundary of the second shape is attached to the surface of the primary shape.
If they aren’t attached, the the secondary shape’s perimeter lines will be thicker than when coplanar, and will not work as desired with the push-pull tool until they are coplanar. Below you can see the difference between the line weights:
Let me know if this makes sense and helps. The push-pull tool is the most commonly used tool in my workflow, and I think most people’s Sketchup workflow. It really can be fun and awesome once you understand it.
