How to push/pull faces that is not facing you

It would be wonderful if there was a simple comand on the keyboard that would allow us to push/ pull faces that is not facing you. Because even if the Xray mode it takes a unnecessary time to do it.

Thank you DaveR but I could only do it by selecting all the 4 lines…the time wasted selecting all the edges its the same as moving the camera underneath it. When I meant a way, I mean a easy shortcut that we all could do it less than a sec.

when I press all connected, it select another face and it wastes time having to unselect it

in the other post that I found after I posted the question

For me:

K back edges on
Double click component
^h my shortcut to hide rest of model
Orbit enough to see a tiny sliver of the bottom face
Push Pull
^h unhide rest of model
Move cursor to reference

Being fluid with hide rest of model and orbiting makes this simple for me…

I sort of understand the request, but faster than I can press a modifier (let’s say Tab) to cycle through all the faces in a component I can select exactly what I want. And that could be many clicks on a complex surface to get to the one I want… or just a few… which is similar to my current workflow.

What about just deleting a face…do the push/pull…then draw a line to ā€˜heal’ that massing face. It’s three extra clicks: Delete. Line Tool. Draw Line. Pretty fast all things considered.

A few very handy shortcuts that I use for various modelling tasks such as yours;

X (toggles X-ray mode on/off)

H (hide selected)
U (unhide last )

~ (toggles Show/Hide Rest of Model)

Alt+` (toggles View Hidden Geometry)

Using good shortcuts becomes super fast and intuitive. I’ve been using (and fine tuning) my keyboard shortcuts for many years and have provided it to others, and they all love it too.

I made an extension to skip a face on select left click and assigned the shortcut shift+f. I’ll put it on EW soon.

Very nice!

But somebody will still say it wastes too much time, or its impractical, or it could be faster, or it could be prettier, or he doesn’t like the music, etc…

The default operation for the X key is a multiplier when making copies etc, making it do something else disables the multiply function I set x-ray as shift&X (⇧X) so I get the use of multiply as standard.

Well the bad news is that I don’t have a good microphone. But the good news is I don’t sing.

I submitted Skip First Face to EW. It does basically what was suggested in this thread by hiding a first selected face, picking the one behind it, then unhiding the first face leaving the one behind it selected. You can’t take fewer steps while sitting down!

We have something in common

How long does it take to become available on EW James?

I’m always impressed with how you create these little marvels

Can’t say for sure. I have a sense that I’ve sometimes submitted near a holiday weekend so submissions dragged out. Then at other times they are fairly snappy. It seems they start sorting through submissions on Mondays, ah, so …I don’t really know. This one is just a menu plugin so the actual time to look at it won’t take long.

Awe. If you’re trying to win me over with flattery, it has worked! But thank you, that is kind.

I actually ā€˜take notes’ on what people post and try to find solutions. For example, I have your post, " Is there a Plugin to Project an Angled Plane onto a Vertical Wall? ", open with the idea of a making a ā€œScribeā€ extension. Basically, all of the suggestions in this thread are good and could have one flavor of extension or another made from them. There are some posters here who come up with really good ideas…

What’s your opinion: should I make extension posts? If so, after the fact of EW approval? Or beforehand, to sort of pass the ball around for ideas? And ā€œyesā€ I am asking because I don’t want to go too far off topic on other people’s posts.

Definitely.

If you enjoy making extensions it makes perfect sense to sound the forum out, and for maximum impact I would start the post before creating the extension and submitting to EW. I often hear that such and such an extension should be part of SketchUp which drives me nuts, because its the creativity of the extension writers such as yourself that makes SketchUp so powerful.

Don’t forget that you can Zoom, Pan and Orbit, change rendering mode, change scene, even in the middle of an operation.
