I am having trouble using section views. I create scenes of different sections but then when i update my model reference in Layout I am unable to select th e different scenes
Share the LayOut file so we can see exactly what you have set up. Most likely you’ve overridden the Camera properties in the viewports so the camera position won’t change when you select the new scene.
Are you still using SketchUp 2019?
Version 25.0.659
Please update your forum profile.
where do i do this?
Click on the M in the upper right corner of the forum page. Then click on the person icon, Preferences, and Profile. After updating the profile info scroll down and click on the Save button.
And if you need help with your LO file, share it so we can see exactly what you are working with.
thanks i found it and updated. how am i to share the file? (sorry about all the questions)
Drag it to the reply window. If it is too large use a file sharing service.
Also consider updating to 2026 after you get this problem sorted.
the vue build.layout (6.4 MB)
MONUMENT B - .skp (6.0 MB)
So you have overridden the camera properties for every viewport on the page that is displayed when the LO file opens. As I wrote, if you’ve done that, the viewport won’t change the camera properties when you change the scene. Reset the Camera properties for the viewports.
Every one of these viewports is using the same scene. That’s not the correct way to set things up in LayOut. Each one of those should be using a different scene.
i make section views but then when i update the model reference it changes everything it doesnt seem like i can independently change the scenes to show the section view.
See my reply just before yours.
Also, the three scenes in the model you shared all show the exact same camera position which looks like this:
You need to set up each scene to show the model the way you want it.
There’s only the one section plane in your model and it doesn’t cut anything.
so should i make scenes for each view in sketchup?
Absolutely!
Yes. For the elevations and plan view scenes make sure you set the Camera to Parallel Projection.
And you’ll need a section plane for each section cut that you want to show.
so if i understand it correctly do all my views, ie: front, back, left, right, top, etc. in sketchup as scenes. then make my section cuts as scenes in sketchup, then i will make just make selections in layout from the scenes?
Yes.
You should probably take some time to go through the LayOut tutorials at learn.sketchup.com
Also make sure you are using tags correctly. ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged. I fixed that in your model.
And here I’ve created scenes for the Perspective and elevation views.
MONUMENT B .skp (6.1 MB)
You’ll need to set up the plan scenes with the sections.
MONUMENT B - .skp (6.0 MB) think i may be getting it now, lmk if i am going in the right direction
That’s better. I would turn off the section planes in the style so you don’t have them graying out the model in LayOut.
Also look at model I set up for you. If you use Zoom Extents to make the model fill the model window and you set up the camera so it’s in the same location for each of your plan section views set up of the viewports in LayOut will be easier.
I’ve gone through your latest model and set up the scenes properly.
MONUMENT B dr.skp (6.0 MB)
Here’s a rework of your LayOut file.
the vue build DR.layout (6.3 MB)
