How to import model from 3ds Max with textures?

Hi,

I’m pretty new to Sketchup. I made a model in 3ds max, UV unwrapped and textured. Now I can import the model into Sketchup without textures and its UV coordinates are messed up. The smoothing groups are also lost. Can anyone help me with these problems?

Thanks.

Hi, it’s pretty easy, convert your sketchup file to 3ds, import in 3dsmax, click to “customize” —> configure user paths ----> external file ----> add ----> choice the folder you put 3ds file, —> click use paths… Done

i have this problem 2

Please lmk the solution. I want to import textured models without paying 100$. It’s pretty simple in almost every softwares. but here the Transmutr developers requesting 100$ for those basic functions. Pretty funny.

What type of files are those models you want to import?

So in SkechUp!

Have you tried importing them into any of the other software where it’s prety simple?

Importing 3D Studio Max files is impossible in any other software without owning 3D Studio Max. The format is proprietary to Autodesk. You must export the files from 3DSMAX in a format that your application can import.

Preferably UV Unwarpped FBX of course. You can suggest any other file type as long as it keeps its pixel where they supposed to be when I apply my materials. For example

This from Megascans. I import a model (Any File type…doen’t matter)…make material with unwrapped texture they provided(or I made) and just hit apply and boom…it looks like how it supposed to be. Do you get the point?

In sketchup, my current method would take me a lot of time with projection- rotating textures. Please give me some free methods.

What do you mean? From blender to Unreal Engine, all you have to do is Import FBX, Make material…apply. That will reproduce same result in all programs.

Maybe Blender is a better software to do this task, there you can export as Collada and import it from sketchup if you really need to have that model on sketchup.

This is a model I just done in 3Ds Max. Then I exported the collada file

Result in Sketchup. Wood Grain directions are wrong.

Thanks for giving me hint

Now I research for it a bit. I’m supposed to export with Collada file and 3ds max exporter is a bit problematic.

Nah still the same result.

Have you tested that file by importing it into Unreal or Blender? Does the material appear correctly?

I tested with an .fbx file from sketchfab that I imported into Blender and exported as .dae. It appears ok in SketchUp.

Thank you I’ll try that out.

What is the procedure when exporting from blender to sketchup as dae file? When I try that, the Blender exported Map #1 and Map #2. Upon importing into sketchup, the prompt says cannot find file "(Path/Path/xxxx/…/Map). It should be Map#1 and Map#2 Right?

File > Export > Collada (.dae)

I created a test model and the export/import works without problems, with the textures correctly oriented.

And these “Map #1 and 2” does not also have a file extension like .JPG, .PNG, etc…? Did you look in the folder where you save them?

They do have extensions.

The prompt when I import them. Keep in mind that the maps are exported from 3ds max via FBX file. The textures are perfectly fine in blender. In blender, they appear as “01-Default”, “02-Default” as materials. I tried what you did in exporting. Still same issue.

Thanks problem, solved. I have to uncheck Copy texture. Somehow my machine doesn’t work when I copy texture.
