Hide doesn't actually hide... makes it crosshatched

When I try to temporarily hide a thing, it’s still visible, just transparent and cross hatched.

I was expecting it to simply disappear, like it does if I assign it to a layer and then hide the layer. Training videos show the hidden part disappearing… is there a setting I’m missing?

Go to the View menu and Untick Hidden geometry. This is how you can find hidden things,

Provided that all Layers are set to visible, of course

Imagine how annoying it would be if everything hidden on a hidden layer appeared every time you turned on hidden geometry just to work with current hidden geometry. I think I’ve written the word hidden so much the text is hiding.
