I am just teaching Sketchup to a new employee, who will work on a windows machine. I keep hitting the F1 button on his keyboard instead of ESC which keeps opening Chrome and the help page. This seems to be the ONE shortcut I cannot modify. Is there a way to, get rid of the F1 - Help key connection?
I understand F1 for Help is a system wide standard in Windows. SketchUp isn’t the only application where I, too, sometimes hit it instead of Esc.
I had a similar question, I think the answer is the same
As stated by @Anssi system wide shortcuts generally can’t be changed so if you are using a laptop I am not sure how to help. However, if you are running a desktop maybe getting a different keyboard could help. Some keyboards even feature removable keycaps so it could in theory be removed to reduce the odds of a typo. I myself have a few custom keycaps for my home desktop for different tasks.
The right keyboard can make a world of difference for some people.
I use Windows Powertoys to remap F1 to ctrl+s aka save.
Before that I used AutoHotKey to do the remapping.
That is probably a good trick. The help systems currently in use for different applications are not very useful as a rule, at least for a reading-the-manual type of person. The best for SketchUp is still the one for version 6 that could also be read as a downloadable PDF.
Thanks y’all! Ok - I will forward this to my team member. I think remapping will make sense, I don’t know anybody who has a need for “instand F1 help” in software. In Sketchup the ESC key is just too important. Now back to my Mac and my perfect setup.
