Haven't renewed my subscription after 2024 but can no longer access old files

Used my 2024 version for a year, and work for an educational institution that is now taking forever to pay for another year of subscription. In the meantime, I can no longer access my old files.

Feels like you’re holding my work ransom. Do not like.

?

where are your files ?
on your computer ? then you can open them in sketchup web.

already on sketchup web ? sketchup web is free.

Pretty sure they are. Wish the software design was intuitive enough that didn’t have to visit a forum and ask someone how on earth I open my files on the web browser.

I mean, when you go to sketchup web, on the landing page, you have 2 options. create a new file. or open a file from your computer.
how much more intuitive does it need to be ?

on a side note, yeah, when you stop paying a subscription, you can’t open your files no more. I have old archicad files I can’t open. or artlantis. There are solutions (maybe?) for me to import them in a different app, but usually yes, proprietary formats are limited to their native app.

in fact, with SU you’re in luck, not only do you still have access to the free web app, but some other 2D/ 3D software can open or import skp files quite well.

It’s not intuitive from the sketchup software on my desktop. It just freezes and stays blank when I try to open a file from my computer with no prompt whatsoever to try to open my old file in a web browser. I don’t interact with the software on the web normally.

If the way I normally open a file results in an error that can be mitigated by another route, then maybe sketchup should have a message box pop up telling me how I can continue to access my file and not just be mute.

FWIW, the subscription for SketchUp works like any other subscription. When you stop paying for it, they stop supplying it. Stop paying for your internet subscription and you lose your internet.

That isn’t surprising. They wouldn’t be likely to suggest that you can use the hobbyist version after you’ve created your files with a Pro subscription. The free version wouldn’t be appropriate if you were doing commercial work with the software.

It sounds like you have found a bug in that old version of SketchUp as usually it will tell you that you have no license, and give you options of how to gain one.
