Yes I can replicate that as a bug, but like Paul it’s not something that has raised its head in my workflow.
This could equally be a reply to the previous topic - “Layout for 2D plan sets?” and mostly for Andy85 who I see is also a Kiwi architectural designer of similar vintage! (ProCadSys has just set up an NZ Facebook page for us). Thanks for sharing the scrapbooks (square aspect would be better): Brightman also has most of those (and more) which can be re-sized for metric. I came direct from pencil on tracing to Sketchup about 8 years ago, so do not have all that AutoCad baggage: in consequence I do the full drawing set in Sketchup (tagged for linetypes and to NZ-CBI) before importing scenes into Layout, then adding minor tweaks and dimension/annotations/referencing. As a drawing process, Layout is slow clumsy and frustrating unless you make good use of scrapbooks, but Layout 24 has a brilliant double-click feature which takes you straight into a Sketchup model with instant updating. Auto-numbering/text is pretty good too! Perhaps next year they will provide a useful guideline feature, and reconcile operational aspects between Sketchup and Layout?
It’s not specific to my workflow, it’s a workflow that all users would engage with but have likely not yet sighted! The scale tool isn’t off by much, but if doing critical dimensional work directly in LayOut, it is a real issue, BTW it is designed to do just this!!!
For example, I produced these today (1 of 3), from simple objects nestled, scaled, and compiled. These are Quality Assurance Guides, used to confirm profiles edged in our prefabricated panels. We added a bunch of new profiles, but essentially updated to exclude 2mm from most profile dimensions (our production is now far more accurate).
I informed the client I’d get them that afternoon, but I kid you not, it took 2 full days (total time I estimated 6 hours max). Part of that time was running dimensions across each and every face as the scale function can no longer be trusted. Required was lots of rescaling to attempt a match. Many I just gave up on as we can tolerate it (0.2-0.5mm); in '21 you’d get absolutely ZERO error with absolutely ZERO effort!
I’m sorry that you’re having these problems Richard.
Dimensional accuracy is also critical to what I do and I have not had the problems you are experiencing and I check and double check my annotated dimensions before issuing.
I’m curious how you draw these and what the LO file looks like. I wouldn’t use the scale tool nor even draw them in LO - I’d draw all the shapes in SKP then use that as my base. I’d add the labels in LO. Far more control, far faster (for me) to make the drawings / shapes, and far easier to create derivatives using components / stretching and scaling geometry, etc.
That’s not to say that it is OK for something that worked before to not work now - but there must be an underlying technical glitch. Have you filed a detailed bug report? Did you start a new thread about this and share video and problem files, as well as show how it works in 21?
Hey Mike, that are simply derived from simple rectangles scaled to predetermined ractangles! My workflow would have been different if starting the job again, given the issues with the scale tool!
Personally I’d not use SKP for this as we need clean non segmented curves for the CNC machine!
Having come from working with all versions of LayOut pre current, this entire process both in creation of the dielines and overall layout to sheet was so much easier. But it’s just not limited to this type of process! '21 was like any any other drawing or page layout tool on steroids, in its current version, you are forced to look for alternatives!
I know Mike, I must sound like a complete knob with my carry ons, but for me its now a completely broken tool, one that had so much potential!
And I guess I’m just as disappointed as I was soon to deliver a comprehensive guide for architects and designers, on how to use it as a fast design tool for floor planning and presentation, with a complete set of stylised scrapbooks (one for each plan style) containing all items required for residential, commercial, industrial and workplace planning. Layout was about to become the most comprehensive space planning tool available! - but now my plan is done. A tool that no longer works for this function, literally has no future! And its all down to the issues I’ve been raising: Both inferencing and scaling are broken, unless fixed - my intention falls short on delivery!
I believe if you export from SKP as 3d model to DXF / DWG you will get clean curves for CNC. But it’s been awhile since I’ve done this.
Inferencing for me is working fine. It took a bit to get used to it, but everyone is different.
I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Please start a new thread as a bug report - post video of behavior in 2021 (there is no reason you can’t use that version of LayOut for the moment) and behavior in 2024.
I stuck with 22 until 24 seemed stable. I skipped 23 altogether.
Yeah, that does sound good, and I agree a guide would be good. I have always found it a bit strange that layouts selection and modification tools have slight differences to sketchup and a few tips and guides definitely help. With the scrapbooks… I played around with the rectangle setout so I could get maximum size in a side pallet way better than square which will scale down. The trick is to edit the scrapbook and change the page size in page setup. It only affects the scrapbooks and not the main file. You can play around to suit your scrapbook but I altered all the std scrapbooks to suit. Great to see another KIWI using number 8 wire technology ![]()
I too have found the square layout is limiting in the scrapbook! It means the side panel needs to be set quite wide!
Admittedly, and as we know, the SketchUp guys rarely go back on any updated functionality, and workarounds for the inferencing issue doesn’t exist. And unfortunately, the use of LayOut as a fast space planning tool, was completely reliant on native in lieu of forced inferencing. I’m now hoping another software solution might become a layout competitor, as it no longer works for the use I make of it!
