Hardware Advice ~

Hi
We just received this computer as outlined below and using sketchup and Vray were not sure if we have the best computer for us. Speed is an important factor for us. Any advise would be appreciated, thank you.

I would say that before any new hardware breakthroughs are made, your computer is very nearly as fast as you can get for SketchUp. The single-threaded performance of the CPU is only about 10% slower than the fastest ever ultracool whizbang processor in the list. As CPU is not the only thing affecting performance, overall I would predict that the difference is hardly noticeable.

If this still feels slow to you the only possible solution is to model more smartly. Less faces and edges. Less large texture images. Check the 3D Warehouse eye candy for these before placing it into your model. No forests of 3D trees or traffic jams of 3D detailed cars.

Ah, that is a nice build @Exhibitionist. I am a little jealous of that 4080 as I myself am still running with a 1080 series GPU in my desktop although I don’t do a lot of rendering on it so it still meets my needs for now.

As with all things SketchUp though, smart modeling will usually provide a bigger benefit than better hardware so making sure you are focused on what you need the most in terms of details will help more than going for a top of the line computer. If you can provide a example file or an example of what you want to achieve that would help a bit as we could make a few recommendations on how to model smart to get the results you need.

Additionally, Anssi is correct that CPU single thread speed is more important than core count so while you would see some improvement with a top of the line computer like the one you are outlining it might not be as big of a performance gain as you want.

Finally, it looks like the model you are referring to uses an AIO-style liquid cooler. Those are pretty awesome but they do wear out and lose performance after about 5 or 6 years so be sure that you are comfortable replacing it yourself or have a plan to get it serviced ahead of time if you are doing CPU heavy workflows.
