Hi @Bdalton thanks for the post! While I am not allowed to recommend a specific hardware configuration or manufacturer, I can give you some information about some of the unique things about SketchUp that you may need to consider going forward.
First up we need to talk about core count vs speed when it comes to CPUs. Lots of manufacturers are happy to talk about core count these days but as with all 3d modeling apps, the modeling part is all confined to a single core. This means that speed is more important than core count. Other apps may be able to use multiple cores though so if you intend to use the computer for more than SketchUp you may be able to get some use out of them but you will not need them for SketchUp.
Second, a decent GPU is good to have, especially if you are using a rendering software that relies on one. I personally don’t do a ton of rendering so I am not the best person to ask about this though so I’ll let someone more qualified like a sage expand on this point if they are so inclined.
Third, while 16GB of RAM is solid at the moment, I would personally future proof my computer a bit and shoot for 32GB if I could, especially if I am working with large files. I don’t know what your budget is or what your workflow looks like so take this part of the advice with a grain of salt as 16 may be fine for you.
Finally, I should mention that while laptops are great as they allow for portability, you will end up paying more for the same amount of computing power that a desktop can output. If your workflow requires you to move from place to place a laptop makes total sense, but if you are always working from the same place, sometimes a desktop can save you a little bit of money for the same level of power.
At the end of the day, you are almost looking for something akin to a midrange gaming computer. While you won’t need quite as much as a high end one, don’t be afraid to ask about gaming hardware as you are looking for something that will work for you. Hopefully this is helpful advice.
Hi Casey, thanks for reaching out. This is the machine I just purchased as I could not find a business laptop or a desktop with similar config at this price point. Can you let me know if this is sufficient with the exception of the RAM which I can upgrade cheaper than having it come pre-installed.
That looks like a nice computer Bdalton. While company policy forbids me from saying any specifics, I would be happy with that for my personal use. I can’t really offer any advice if that is sufficient though as I don’t know what your workflow looks like. What one user finds to be good enough might be overkill for someone else or might not be enough for another.
