Could you tell me the Gaussian Splatting version you’re using ? And the Sketchup version ?
Is there another popup message that appears at the same time ?
For now let’s focus on sample files but as mihai correctly mentioned, when using ply files, you need to make sure these are GS files and not point cloud nor meshes files.

I use Sketchup 26.2.243 64-bit
I have tried to open the sample files, the donut (thank’s for mihai :slight_smile: ), and tired to open scanivers ply files wich I created with iPhone.
I have poor internet connection, and we fight with the provider. Is it possible this cause the error message?
The gauissan plugin version is: 1.2026.0701

Can you alternatively try to export out of ScaniVerse with the SPZ format? The Gaussian Splatting plugin does support that file type as well.

possibly, I tried on one of my training PC, it imported as planned, but if I turn off the wifi, first I can’t launch the splat import window, and then if I turn on the wifi, open the window, and turn it back off, the ply file won’t import.

@yohann_salaun if that’s the case, and it requires a connexion to import / work, we need a better error message :slight_smile:

Yes there is a need of an internet connection and yes the error message is really bad. There should be an update of the extension soon to improve the message as well as some small bugfixes and LCC2 support.

Yes, I’ve tried the spz format. It won’t work either.

Does not work at all for me. When trying to display a splat even the example ones SketchUp crashes to desktop. I changed all settings I could find with no result.

  • your version of GS extension
  • your version of Sketchup
  • could you record your loading of a sample and open the ruby console so that I can see if something is written on it
  • also, could you check in your %TEMP% folder files looking like this (GS_INIT_LOG.TXT, SU_SPLAT_INIT_FAILURE_*.txt (if any), GS_SHUTDOWN_LOG.TXT) and send them to me ?
    (%TEMP% folder is something like C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Temp)

It’s so great being able to test this feature out. As I look to the future of what it’s like to use the Gaussian splatting technology inside of SketchUp, I can’t help but wonder if the discontinuation of the SketchUp Viewer in the Meta environment should be brought back so that it becomes easier to experience the Gaussian Splatting in our design work. Now that you’re not standing in a virtual reality but you’re actually standing in a recorded reality.

While this was nagging me in the back of my head, I saw the latest newsletter from Andrew Price, the man famous for the doughnut tutorial in Blender. His newsletter starts with him trying 4D video, wearing a Meta headset. I’ve posted his link below. It’s a fascinating development, and I wonder how it ties in with SketchUp’s Gaussian Splatting efforts.

I tried 4D video and it blew me away

When you view volumetric video with a headset, it’s amazing how quickly your brain is fooled into thinking it’s reality. It felt rude to stand in their eyeline for example. After this, watching content on a normal screen felt like watching black and white silent film. Inevitably, this format will make its way to Youtube, streaming apps, and maybe even become a new format for narrative features. And it’s only possible because of the 3D gaussian splat paper which released just 2 years ago.

You can try several demos of 4D videos demos in your browser here but it’s a different experience with a VR headset. If you have a headset, you can try it with the Gracia app.

I cannot answer about Sketchup Viewer in Meta but 4DGS interest me.
We’ve found a lot of use for 3DGS in SketchUp, main issues remain accessibility (capture and cross platform). But I honestly dont see what 4DGS would bring more inside SketchUp. Also it’s probably a bit more complex to train since there are less tools for it.
So, for you, what would it bring more to your workflow ?

Here’s my thinking: SketchUp is a static environment, but the spaces we design are not. Once a retail space, home, or office comes into use, it’s full of movement, and anticipating that movement is part of the design brief. It’s how we show clients we understand not just their space, but how it will be used.

We already have a precedent for this in the product. SketchUp PreDesign lets us study the movement of the sun and the changing seasons before we design. 4DGS would let us do the same for the movement through and around a site, and not only people. Think of a live construction site: crane swings, truck routes, machinery working around fixed structures. Think of traffic through an intersection we’re redesigning, aircraft and ground vehicles choreographed across an airport apron, or vessels moving through a port. And beyond operational movement, there’s movement at the timescale of the project itself: a sequence of site captures over weeks is recorded as-built progress, the reality-capture counterpart to a 4D construction schedule. That reaches well beyond architecture into the industries Trimble already serves.

There’s a capture-side argument too. Today, whoever does the scan has to work around movement, scanning before the store opens or in the early morning to avoid ghosting artefacts. Movement is noise we schedule around. With 4DGS, that same movement becomes usable data. The “problem” becomes the feature.

And I do get it, what I’m suggesting is a huge technical challenge. Capturing 4DGS is a very different proposition from a person walking through a space with a SLAM scanner in hand, and then there are the file sizes, playback performance in the viewport, and what capture hardware will cost down the line.

But we wouldn’t need full 4DGS playback inside SketchUp straight away. Imagine scrubbing a capture to a single time slice and assigning different time slices to different Scenes in the model, temporal data inside SketchUp (or a headset) while we model against a static frame. Even that staged version would add more value to a client’s project than continuing to offer them the presumption that the site we’re operating in is static. Few sites ever are.

More broadly, I don’t see SketchUp as just a design tool for producing 2D submissions to a Municipality or legislator. I think as much as possible should happen inside it. Between SketchUp and Trimble Connect, I’m echoing @heatheradkins’ recent point that SketchUp is a platform:

But you’re right that multiple captures of the same site should also be made possible. It makes me think, I need to investigate the relighting part as well. Lots of wonderful ideas to look at !

I have updated the plugin. At first, I got a different error message, but then the previous message popped up again. Thanks a lot for looking into this issue!

It looks like you have issues for your entitlement. Is it something that you also observe with other extensions ? Would you be a Scan Essentials user as well by chance ?

"Hi, I have a SketchUp Pro subscripton. My other extensions work fine, but I noticed that almost every extension shows an ‘invalid signature’ warning, and I’m not sure why. I also use the ‘Undet for SketchUp’ extension. Could this be conflicting with the Gaussian Splat extension?

@yohann_salaun a suggestion for further development: on some of the computers in our studio we haven’t installed the Splat plugin as of yet. I did ask one of the designers to open a model which I knew has a Splat in it. SketchUp at the moment has no notification that says, “Your model contains a Splat. Please download the plugin to utilize it in your model,” or something along those lines. Maybe this is a helpful feature for a future release.

My Windows 11 languange is hungarian but my Sketchup languange is english
