Dave, I’m curious to know if you created the finished model on the right by first drawing the wire frame in the middle and then doing a Follow Me?

Yes. That’s exactly it. I drew a square using the Rectangle tool with the From Center option.

FWIW, I created the path from the large box in the background and used Offset to offset the edges as shown. After that I erased what isn’t the path.
