Im trying to find out how I can do this a faster way. I have some wainscoting that I want to trim out the inner boxes with panel moulding. Right now im selecting each line path and then clicking the follow me tool. Does not feel very efficient.
Wainscoting.skp (456.0 KB)
Just select all the lines at once then use the follow me tool on the moulding profile.
im having an issue where I cant seem to place the moulding profile on the edge of the lines. it just wants to go onto the faces. What could that be from?
Don’t take this the wrong way but your model really isn’t ready for the chair rail on top of the wainscoting. It really isn’t ready for the wainscoting. You need to learn about using groups and components to separate the various elements of the model. They prevent geometry from merging as it is doing in your model. Here for example you’ve extruded the chair rail profile out of the floor is some places.
The floor should probably be a separate group, the walls should be a group, the windows should be at least one group, and so on. How are you planning to use this model? Are you intending to use it as a plan for creating the wainscoting in the shop? If so, you should be using components for the individual elements of the wainscoting. Each part you would cut in the shop should be a component. You should also learn about proper use of tags. ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags.
Once you have the walls and the wainscoting properly modeled and you’re ready for the chair rail molding, create a path for Follow Me and place the profile at one end of it. Here I’ve got two paths for either side of the window. I’ve put these up above your model to prevent them from merging with all your ungrouped geometry.
Then, running Follow Me is a simple matter of selecting the path, getting the Follow Me tool (I have a keyboard shortcut for it) and clicking on the profile.

I made a component of the resulting geometry and named it so that it could be easily identified in Outliner. I didn’t do the little short wall section here but you would repeat the process there. With the sections completed and the geometry as components or groups, it can be moved down into place.
If your walls and wainscoting were modeled properly you could set up the path and profile in place at the top of the wainscoting andyou wouldn’t need to move them down after the Follow Me operation.
BTW, you need to sweep up all the little pieces of chair rail molding laying around the model.
Perhaps before you go further with this you should go through the tutorials at learn.sketchup.com.
