Flextools issues Mac OS Sketchup 2024

heyo since installed Flextools earlier this week I’ve had a number of strange behaviors related to that extension and overflowing to Sketchup since:

Sketchup behaviors

  • updating a scene causes the scene to behave strangely: whatever scene you click on subsequently takes on the properties of the previous scene but it doesn’t rewrite the scene i.e. if you click again on another unaltered scene and then back to the last scene it displays as intended

Flextools behaviors

  • flex tools components not moving on axes; since closing and re-opening my file if I try to move a flex tools component it will not lock to an axis…even though the axes light up when holding an arrow key the component will not hold on that path
  • walls failing to heal and/or cut when moving a component

Anyone else experiencing these issues or have any suggestions? Much appreciated

here’s an example of the scenes issue (now that I’ve figured out how to do screen captures)

I can’t say that I’m seeing any of this. I’m on Ventura not Sonoma, but otherwise an M1 Max and SU 2024, and FlexTools 2.15.3.

hmm thanks for chiming Robert…as far as the camera/scenes issues is concerned I think I figured out the root of the cause. I had turned off camera location in the “properties to save” area of the scenes tab as I didn’t want the view to shift at all in layout. However I don’t understand that would affect other scenes…

No problem with FlexTools. I have tha same OS version as you.
You should consider that FlexTools components are glued to a face ans could have different axes (blue axe is perpendicular to the glued face) as your model see this…

ok, hmm mine is functioning somewhat differently…also on reopening my model the existing flex tools components no longer cut through walls if moved.

You can refresh the cut

Upload your model in order to test what is happening…

@rtches thank you for this; unfortunately this problem persists after closing/reopening a model. when moving a window or door the wall cutter function doesn’t work even after hitting refresh

I can say that I frequently have problems with the active cutting feature breaking over time as a work on a model without really ever understanding what broke it. Everything works fine at first, and I go on working on the model only to find sometime later that openings are set in stone and not subject to moving/deleting/refreshing. Sometimes I cut the windows & doors to the clipboard, manually heal all the holes, and then paste-in-place the windows and doors from the clipboard and that restores the function. I suspect editing the underlying component that gets cut breaks things but I never know quite when or why.

@RTCool glad to know I’m not the only one  i find it very unreliable for my workflow right now

I’ve been having the same issues as you for quite a while now. In fact I came across your post because I was looking for a solution to the same bugs, particularly the component not locking and moving along the green axis. Also have issues with the wall not “healing” if I move the flex tools component. That typically only happens if I close the file and reopen, not when I first create the component.

Ping @Yoni . Maybe he can help you

Sorry for being so late getting back to all these questions.

  1. Gluing: As @rtches mentioned when placing a flex component, by default it will glue to the plain it was first placed on. Gluing making it easier for the initial placement of the component, but it aslo prevents the component from moving in and out in relation to the wall.

  2. Ungluing: You can unlgue it with Right Click > Unglue, but once you move the window in or out the cutting will disappear too (at least in the current wall cutter version).

  3. Inset: So, to move the window/door in and out in relation to the face of the wall, you must change the ‘Inset’ setting that is inside each of the components. 0 = flush with the wall.

  4. Making copies: When you want to make a copy of an already glued window/door the easiest way is to Copy and Paste and then you can place it on any other plain.

  5. Walls not healing: It can happen sometimes that the walls don’t heal correctly or fail to heal completely. This can happen for example after exploding a component/group that has walls and wall cutters inside it. It can also happen when changing the hierarchy of the windows/walls through Outliner. In these cases the breaking of the dynamic openings can be prevented by following a few simple steps (‘Remove Cuts’ > Do the operation you need > ‘Refresh’). See here more about this: WallCutter - Instantly Cut Through Walls in SketchUp

  6. Avoid editing cut walls: If you find yourself needing to alter the geometry of a dynamic opening, this can screw things up later when moving the window/door. If you need to make change to the opening best to ‘Unlink’ the cut (from within the wall cutter settings) so it won’t be dynamic anymore.

  7. Repairing broken openings: @RTCool 's solution above for repairing already broken openings is the best way to go!

  8. Wall cutter openings breaking on save?: If you place a wall cutter onto a wall, save the model (without any other changes like in point 5 above) and when you next open it, it is broken, that is definitely a problem we should look into. We used to have a bug like this a long time ago with groups, but it has since been solved.

I hope answered all the questions so far.
