File Format for Components

What type of file format is required for the 3D warehouse components? I have components I would like to add to the Warehouse for use in my designs but I am unsure of what file formats they need to be in.

Thank you for your clarification.

They need to be SKP files. Components are really just SketchUp models, after all. What file format were you thinking of?

So I have engineering files used in designing Audio / Video Components. I can export the files in vector graphics or dwg or any thing that could hopefully be used to convert them to be used in 3d Warehouse. Or do you think there will be an easier way to do this?

You can import dwg and other vector formats into SketchUp to create components that you can upload to the Warehouse if you want or save as a local collection. You need SketchUp Shop or SketchUp Pro.

Your profile is confusing. It says you are using the free web based SketchUp 17.2 but that doesn’t exist.

Yeah I’m not sure what is happening with the Profile…

I’ll look into that.

Thanks for the help with this.

I’ll import dwg into SketchUp and go from there.

Thanks for the profile thing… I updated my profile.

Thanks for updating it.

FWIW, dwg and other vector imports aren’t available in SketchUp make. That requires Pro or Shop. You could import raster images to use as a guide while you model the parts. As a hobbyist, that will be good experience for you, though.

Looks like Shop does not offer Dynamic Components. Am I missing something?

Nope. You’re not missing anything. If you need to use Dynamic Components you need a desktop version and if you want to make dynamic Components you’ll need SketchUp Pro.

Thanks for all the quick responses Dave! I know your depth of experience brings you amazing results here…

I downloaded Pro… albeit Trial for now. Make Component is Greyed out… what do i need to do in order to make a speaker component from a .dwg?

Thanks again for all the guidance…

With Groups and Components, you select what you want to include, and the the menu option should be there.

If it isn’t there for you, try to describe your steps, or even upload an example file for us to try.

I am uploading a screen shot.

Colin, I’m trying to import a .dwg file of a speaker and make it a component that is usable within SketchUp

Imported DWGs are already a Group. Exploding would be worth doing, then Select All, then make component.

Or simply right click and Make Component.

But you seem to be misunderstanding what components and dynamic components are.
It would be worth spending some time learning the fundamentals.

I was going to give you a link to the Campus but it seems to be down at the moment.

Working again now.

You are right… I need to learn more… I was under the impression that dwg files that I have of equipment that I designed I could bring them into here and create 3d models to use…

Depending on what they are, you can.
Could you attach a small one here so we can see what you have and perhaps show you what you need to do.

what format should the files be in?

You’ve said you have dwg files. If you share one of those we can give you some guidance in how to use it to create a SketchUp model that you can save as a component and upload to the 3D Warehouse.
