I am still very new to sketchup, and trying to design a D&D themed game room. I searched the warehouse and the variety of models for fantasy themed is a little limited. I see dozens of sites promoting models online but not sure which ones would work with Sketchup. I also saw YT videos saying that SUApp could make models out of images and even the video made a fantasy themed fire place. Is this app / extension the best solution for making/finding models of swords /axes/ fantasy decoration items ect? I spent a while trying to find a quest board, and instead was able to build it in sketch using a image from YT as an example. Not sure I could do more complex things. Any guidance and advice would be much appreciated.
plenty of things in the 3d warehouse, thatâs for sureâŚ
here is a medieval city
this account Iâve been keeping an eye on for years, has a LOT of stuff ready for DnD
and a lot more things around the warehouse. just keep an eye on the weight, donât grab too heavy things
What video did you see?
Which version of SketchUp are you really using? Your profile says âSketchUp for Web (Free only)â and â2025 Desktopâ which is contradictory.
If you have a Pro or Studio license and are using SketchUp desktop, there are extensions available that can cut out an image from transparent background pixels to create a face from which you can make a 3D object.
Thank you for the links will check them out now, when you say watch out for weight, what does this mean? really big files or lots of data? No idea how to check for it.
I downloaded the 6 day free trail after using the web free one for an hour, I will be purchasing a plan when the 6 days are up, any recommendations which one I should get? This is only for me to learn not for work or school or anything. I am very interested in the extensions you referred too.
Most likely the Pro subscription will be suitable for you.
There are several extensions. SKM Tools has Image Trimmer which will do what I described. Also Pic2Shape by Fredo6. Both are available from Sketchucation.
The pro is $400 a year, is this the only version that will allow me to use the extensions? or $100 a month. The Go plan for $130 is web based, so no extensions I understand. Or maybe wait until I start classes in August and try get a student version? Is that web only or desktop, will need to read some more. Not sure can convince my wife to let me spend $400 on the program just starting to learn even though its really fun and interesting.
Holy hell there is a bunch of very cool models in that DnD account you shared. Already found a few I would like to try out. Was looking for items that matched the RL objects I already own, I will share some pictures in a minute
These are some of the decorations I have, currently lent them to a friend for the public library to promote her summer fantasy theme ( she takes very good care of them)
Going a lot faster on sketchup free version, already saw that a bunch of ideas will not work with my limited space, will have to move a few things around
Tossed a few ideas into Chatgpt for ideas now I want to see if can add a fire place to this wall and 2 large wooden beams in between the two outer dragons
If I can get a visual guide to follow I can try to build it like I did when I started the entrance to the room ( still missing the plaster)
exactly
thatâs a desktop version, so pro.
itâs actually not a bad Idea you have, as you see, there are already a lot of things at the ready in the 3d warehouse, so you could spend the next few weeks learning sketchup (check learn.sketchup.com) and trying stuff before moving in august to the student version
two things. file size (in mb or kb) is usually the result of heavy materials or massive amount of geometry. if itâs materials, itâs fine, there are ways or tools to remove or reduce them. if itâs quantity of geometry, youâre a bit limited.
this map is 1,6mb and just 6 polygons. so clearly, the weight comes from the photo.
the other thing that makes a file heavy is the quantity of polygons / faces.
this file is 9,44 million polygons. OFF COURSE itâs 13mb, if you have 9,44 million of something it adds up.
having a 9 million polygon file for a whole city is massive but itâs a whole city. you can probably lower that number by deleting stuff you donât need.
now, imagine using a 9million polygon door. now that would be stupid.
some things like the dragon heads will have a lot of polygons, not much of a choice there. a chair doesnât need that many. itâs really a matter of⌠using ones brain ![]()
and donât forget, as soon as you start making stuff, feel free to start your very own SketchUp > Gallery thread where you can show your progress. many of us here have one such thread.
Sketchup might be (mainly) for architecture and design but I suspect many here have dabbled with rpg at some point.
Thank you for the advice, I think I will try and download and use the fun features in the free trial for the few days I have left and I do not think I want the web only version as the extensions sound fun, will need to find out what evidence they need that I will be a student to try and buy that version. Thank you for taking the time to explain,
Cool project. Its nice to see your progress and pictures. Keep them coming.
