External Monitor Graphics PROBLEMS – M2 MacBook Air

I have a M2 MacBook Air 2022 running Sonoma 14.4.1 and an external LG UltraFine 27" Monitor up to date firmware. When I put a SketchUp window on the external monitor and make it the size of monitor and the screen flickers and goes black about 8/10s the way up the screen and is unusable. If I go in to the SketchUp preferences: Graphics and switch to “use classic graphics engine” it works properly. If I use “new graphics engine” it has the black screen issue. Using the older “classic” mode, new features like “ambient occlusion” don’t work. I’ve tried getting help from SketchUp support a few days ago with no response. It seems to have corresponded with upgrading to 2024. Very frustrating.

What resolution is the 5K monitor set to? Does anything change if you try other resolutions?

I take it the LG is extending the desktop, not mirroring the MacBoo Air’s screen?

Thanks for the response. The 5k is set to 2880 x 1620. Correct it is extending the desktop.

That’s interesting, If I change it to any of the other resolutions the black flickering does not occur, only when 2880 x 1620 is selected.

Given Retina, 2280x1620 may really be 4560x3240, which takes it over 4096. That may be important.

I will try to find out if we have any 5k screens to test on.

Thank you I appreciate your help.

“2280x1620 may really be 4560x3240”
Riiiight. I miss the days when the resolution meant the actual resolution not just “vibes.” 2880 x 1620 and 2880 x 1620 (low resolution). Low resolution!? Crazy.

Do a system report and I get this now - it says my ViewSonic is actually 5120x2880 even though it’s always being driven at 2560x1440. The built is display as well, but the report doesn’t offer the same terminology which I find odd.

A colleague, who is off today, has the same monitor as you, and will try some tests on Monday.

Thanks! Yea this monitor and it’s smaller sibling use to be the ONLY external retina displays for the Mac you could buy so I’d imagine there would be quite a few out there and maybe even some sketchup users.

I have been looking at this issue this morning. I have an M1 Macbook running Sonoma 14.4.1 and an external LG UltraFine 27" monitor as well.

I changed to all the resolutions for the LG monitor and the Macbook Pro and I could not cause the flickering to happen when shrinking the monitor size. Switching between classic and new graphics engine performed the same.

Thanks, Kath(SU -QA)

Searching for that monitor now is only showing up 4K versions. Can you say what the exact model number is?

Thanks again for your help Colin (and Kath)!:
