Error: This does not appear to be a SketchUp model and failed to open document, please help

Hey,

This is my first time to get this problem, so my laptop is suddenly shutting down when I still do my work on Sketchup and when I start it again, I cannot open the file. First the original file said “this does not appear to be a Sketchup Model” and second I saw a lot of people changing the .skb to .skp so I did that, but it appears with “failed to open document”.

Can someone help me what to do or recover my file? this is my file

Thank you

Nothing to recover from the file. It contains only zeroes. You can see that in a hex editor.

Where have you been saving the file while working on it? Are you using a cr acked version of SketchUp? Did you experience a power failure?

I’ve been saving the file on my laptop and no there’s no power failure, before my laptop is shutting down it’s lagging and the screen freeze.

And you are using a cr acked version of SketchUp 2023?

I actually don’t really know, I just get this laptop from my family member who already has the app so i can already use it freely. But I think maybe its a cr acked version :smiling_face_with_tear:

In SketchUp go the license information in the Help menu. Show a screenshot of what you see there. This kind of information can be helpful in sorting out the problem.

It shows like this

Show what is under the Classic License tab.

this one?

Yep. That one. It is indeed a cr acked version. It’s illegal to be using it. It’s also lilely to be part of the problem with your file.

Get a legal subscription if you are going to continue using SketchUp.

Oh okay, I don’t know about that sorry.:smiling_face_with_tear:

I’ll start with a legal subscription to continue using SketchUp next time. Thanks for your help and answer.

I have the same issue but i am still using the trial version which ends in a couple of days before i subscribe. The file is not all zeroes but unable to open both skp and skb files

Infact the file is 43mb - both skp and skb files. When i compress it is reducing to 23mb . Please help!

So not entirely zeros but nearly half zeros. If it was a viable SketchUp file it would have still been within one or two percent of the 43mb of the original file.

You can share the file so we can look at it but there’s little hope it is recoverable.

Where were you saving the file while working on it? Did the power get interrupted while you were working on it?

A SketchUp file is in fact a zip file in disguise so an intact file won’t compress. Your result indicates that the file is about half damaged and filled with empty space.

Laptop hung while I was working so I had to switch off the power button. When I switched on I was unable to open the file. The back up file didn’t work either. I am unable to upload the file here- it says too heavy. Is there a way I can share with you?

That’s most likely the reason for the corrupted file. Why did your laptop hang?

I doubt there’s anything to be gained by sharing it but you could upload it to DropBox and share the link.

Could be due to over heating - which I am getting fixed now. There seems to be no other issues. Checked drivers, graphic card etc.

I have uploaded on the gdrive and shared the link. Will that work?

The .skp file is entirely zeroes. It compresses to 51.9 Kb.

The last half of the .skb file is also nothing but zeroes.

These files are writeoffs.

Hopefully that takes care of it. What is the graphics card? “4gb” doesn’t identify the graphics card.
