trying to export a dwg / dxf for a laser to cut out a couple letters, and from layout, all the end user can see is dimensions with no object… any idea why?

How did you create the letters in the LayOut file?
created in sketchup, then used layout to show a flat view, exported from there.
Do you mean you used 3D Text? How about uploading the LayOut file so we can see what you’ve got?
What kind of settings did you use to export? Which LayOut version? In older LayOut versions, depending on settings, your exported lines might all be put in the Paper Space of the DWG/DXF file so they would not show in an application or viewer that only handles Model Space objects.
