Distorted materials

I am an relative experienced SU user, now migrating from Mac to PC. When applying a textured material to a face, I am getting severe distortion - seems like interference between the lines in the material and other lines - see picture. I have a tight schedule and dont have time for this - can anyone help?

The deck texture seems to be using a very dense texture that gives this moiré effect.

Try scaling the texture.

The best would be to attach your model to your next post so that someone can analyse it.

Could be a graphics card issue.
Your forum details still says Mac but talking about migrating to PC.
Does this happen on your PC? If so, please update your forum profile.
Are your graphics drivers up to date? Don’t trust windows on that part, they are notorious for installing bad graphics drivers!
Did you check if your dedicated graphics card is used instead of the intergrated one that most PC’s have?
You could also try different anti-aliasing settings in SketchUp.

I just migrated to PC - a brand new HP Zbook workstation, because I lately had so much troubles with my iMac which I had used for 4-5 ys..
The PC has a NIVIDIA RTX A500 graphix card.
My project file is around 90MB - suppose thats to big to enclose here.

You can use wetransfer, dropbox, google drive or any other platform you want to share files, just upload it to any of those platforms and share the download link.

90mb is a lot for a sketchup model, have you been using models from the 3D warehouse?

That doesn’t always mean it is up to date..

Yeah. Computers are generally pre-loaded with whatever software versions were available when the disc was prepared. Could be many months behind by the time it reaches retailers.

Yes I know its a lot, but usually its working fine - with a little lagging.
I never had an experience like this even with much bigger files.
Think I need a mailadress to be able to share my dropbox folder..?

yeah, like Jean said, it’s a moirĂ© effect.

this is the reason why some fabrics can’t be used on tv, they have thin dark and light lines (usually not perfectly straight) and depending on their orientation, you see a moirĂ© pattern.

basically it’s due to the way all these thin dark and light lines have to be adjusted to appear on a pixel-grid screen.
it shouldn’t show on print.


your material is fine, but it’s a prime candidate for moirĂ©.


here is another extreme.

could the different 3d engines accentuate the effect ( dx12 on pc and metal on mac) ?
no idea. that’s a good question, they could have a different way of approaching the issue.
also, chances are high that your mac and your pc don’t have the same screen, resolution and/or GPU. different machines can show a moirĂ© differently.


solution ? a material with lower contrast will help.


yours is a zebra, it goes from almost black to almost white in, rapide stripes successions.

here is an example, one of the standard 2025 woods. lower contrast, no white lines, almost no moiré

material resizer says you have a handful of very big materials, normally I would lower everything to 1500 - 2000 but here
 looking at the big materials, they are materials that cover big areas. so I’ll allow it :wink:

some z-fighting.

easiest way would be to select all, right click / deselect the lines (only the faces are needed) then apply the same material on the back as on the front.

z-fighting will still exist, but you won’t see it any more.

Ok thanks. Still, this effect does happen most everywhere as well, I have tried some other materials and can see some are better - but never good. I never saw this on my Mac - starting to miss it

I’m gonna say it’s a mix of a different screen + the GPU then.

apple uses good screens. sure, there are better ones but even the low end machines have good screens, they’ve had for years.
on a PC it’s not as simple. my last pc has bad contrast, my current one is better + faster refresh but still
 not as good as my pair of samsung screens.

this is why, the same way a test print is worth it, a test “screening” can be useful (to try whatever you’re doing on the support it will end up on)
