Data Protection

I am a Design and technology teacher and want to use this to introduce CAD and Architecture to my younger pupils. using it in school and having to sign in though means data protection issues, and I have to complete a DPIA. I have looked at the compliance and this seems to pretty much pass everything, but my council Data Protection coordinator has asked I pass a form onto Trimble/Sketchup to complete. I have sent an email about this, and was asked to post in here so the Education Team can pick it up. Can someone from this please contact me so I can email this form and allow my classes to use it? thanks

I hope someone from “the education team” (whatever that is) chimes in to help you, but to be frank this sounds like Trimble is giving you a runaround. This is a user mutual help forum, not an official support site of Trimble! Referring you here seems like an evasion of responsibility!

@CaseyG might be able to help you with this.

I pinged him for you..

Sounds quite right, they should be able to pass it on to the apprpriate people faster than typing out that responce..

Hi everyone, thanks for the @ command to get my attention. I am happy to work with you but I can not make any promises about getting anything signed. Feel free to send it over to me via private message. Additionally if you have any questions about our policies I am happy to find answers to them for you.

Finally, I want to clarify that we do not actually handle any student data. It is all stored on Google or Microsoft servers and we have no way to access it in any way.

Also, if you are in the UK (which it sounds like you might be?) there are other options beyond the web version.

Elmtec are a SketchUp authorised file reseller and we are able to supply educational lab licenses - these do not require any sign in as they are installed on the machine. This simplifies things, although they are provided at a small cost per machine.

If you need any more info on this , drop my colleagues an email on sales@elmtec.co.uk or gives us a bell

But as Casey has mentioned , if you are using the SketchUp for schools system provided via Google , then all data the protection type stuff fall under the google classroom infrastructure (that is presumably already signed off at your school?)

Hi, we are not wanting to purchase anything yet as firstly, we have no money to do so, but secondly, Im unsure of how often we would use it and thats why I was wanting to try the free version. Our senior classes use Autodesk Inventor as it has more complex features needed for exams and assignments. as for the google classroom infrastructure, we use something called GLOW, which is a google based system (I think), but until the Scottish Government makes a deal and puts it on there, a DPIA is needed

HI @CaseyG - a daft question, how do I private message as opposed to replying to this topic?

Click on his name or avatar, then you will heve a button for start message to him…

pm

I dont have that button :sob:

Well, new users may not be able to send private messages at first ??
You might have to write a few more posts for this option to appear, but I don’t remember how to get rid of these restrictions…

Or @CaseyG could speed up your forum rights..

Jumping into this post as this has been an issue since at least early 2023. @CaseyG did try to make progress back then (see this post). Unfortunately, we never got a resolution and ended up not being able to use SketchUp for Education in my school district.

While SketchUp uses Google SSO for authenticating users, they are still the end user software and are required to complete a privacy form for states that have some type of student data privacy law. At this point, SketchUp for Education is technically not allowed to be used by ANY K-12 classroom in the state of Illinois. While some educators may be ignoring the law (link), districts with IT departments that are more on top of things are preventing educators from using SketchUp for Education.

There are numerous other companies that have free software aimed at the education market that use Google for account management AND have signed privacy forms for school districts. This includes companies like Autodesk (Tinkercad) Sphero (Sphero EDU).
