Custom wood texture(s)_ Looking for advice

Hi everyone

This is my first post here, not even sure if I am doing it right or if it’s in the correct category.

I am very new to Sketchup and Vray, I am working on a project where I need to use materials and textures that match the surrounding buildings.

The custom materials /textures I need to are painted wood (as shown in the image) the wood will be used for shutters and doors, mostly that green color, since that is what the building code of the area specifies and white. I am also looking to create a concrete wall with maybe stucco finish (I don’t even know if I am using correct terminology here, please bare with me).

My biggest question is: should I be creating these materials from scratch, I watched a few videos and it seems a bit challenging to be honest and also I am pressed for time, or can I make adjustments to existing materials?

Thanks in advance for any advise/help offered

I would model the boards of the cladding.
The paint looks quite opaque and even, so i think a solid color should be enough. I would give it some subtle roughness variation and if the wood structure is meant to be visible, add some bump.

Just look how the table material is created (first a solid color and later the bump map)

It all depends on how close to the actual, as-built color/texture you want (need) the finished texture to be. If I just need something that is close, oftentimes I can download a suitable color/texture from the SketchUp Texture Club. And even if the color is “off” a bit … if the texture is what I am looking for, oftentimes I can “adjust” the color to align it with my needs.

Also, you might checkout this recent post from @DaveR. He forgot more while having his morning coffee than most of us know. You would do well to use the search feature of the Forum … and pay particular attention to posts by @DaveR.

I make all of my own wood grain materials from images of full length boards, usually between 3 and 8 from the same log so I have choices. I have even made textures that look like wood grain bleeding telegraphing through paint but for painted wood like on a house, I wouldn’t probably bother with the texture since the texture wouldn’t be visible anyway. Think about the scope of the project and what you really need to show.

Thank you so much, this is very helpful, I didn’t even know where to start! I will give these suggestions a try.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I really want to try to get it as close as possible, but because I am pressed for time I will try whatever option takes the least amount of time, while still looking good of course

Ohhh OK, yeah since it is for a small building it won’t be as visible from a distance, thank you for your input
