Custom Toolbars not saving in Sketchup2025

Hi all

i have installed some plugins and put the toolbars where i liek them - however in sketchup25 when i close it, the toolbars are not where i had them in the previous session. Instead they jsut float in the middle of the viewport. Is anyone else experiencing this or does anyone have a solution?

the usual suspect is that you installed sketchup by double clicking on it.
in order to give it full permission, you should right click on the installer, then run as administrator.

good news is, you can fix it : download the installer, right click on it, run as administrator. and from there, choose the “repair” option. it should repair the software’s authorisations.

It’s funny you mention that because I had the exact same issue yesterday and couldn’t figure it out. Then I remembered updating SketchUp on autopilot by just double-clicking the download when the notification appeared. As you say, right-clicking the update installer and selecting ‘Run as Administrator’ solved everything.

I am possibly an adventurous person but I have always pushed my luck by installing by just double-clicking and have never had problems. I still recommend the right-click method for others. I wonder if the antivirus/firewall people are using has a share in the incomplete installs people are getting. I use a Norton package.

oh yeah me too. I use microsoft defender, the vanilla thing.

but I run a pretty minimalist PC, I delete / turn off all the processes I don’t see as necessary, I don’t have anything running in the background, and I have full access to everything.

I think SU25 was the first time I installed a software that way, because I keep advising people to do it so

Reportedly a great number of people install SketchUp using just a double-click and have no problem. That suggests some subtle things must be set differently for those who do have problems. But we see enough of those on the forum and usually find that the right-click Run as Administrator fixes them. So we recommend that method for everyone. Why take the chance that you may be one of the vulnerable?

I’ve never installed by the right-click maner either and it’s always worked, 100% of the time. For 2025 I went into 2024 and checked for updates, and SU said that there was a new version and to click here to install. Just like the programers intended
Not using Norton here (work) nor at home. My work PC is managed by the University’s IS dept and uses MS security.

Just a general note on this.
If you have been around here long enough you know that, anecdotally, weird issues with sketchup ‘can’ occur and be fixed by using the Right Click installation method. You will also know, again anecdotally, that working on files saved anywhere but locally ‘can’ lead to corrupted files.
This doesn’t mean that if these things don’t happen to you that it doesn’t happen, nor does it mean you have to do these things to avoid issues.
In much the same way as drink driving and never having an accident doesn’t prove that drink driving is safe.

Thanks all - appreciate the feedback. I uninstalled sketchup, right clicked it and ran as admin - still didnt work.

Close SketchUp, in File Explorer go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\SketchUp\ Find and delete PrivatePreferences.json. Then find the downloaded installer, right click on it, choose Run as administrator followed by Repair. Do a cold reboot after the repair completes, open SketchUp and set up your toolbars. For good measure open a SketchUp file and save it. After that close and reopen SketchUp. Do the toolbars behave?

BTW, please update your forum profile. It’s a few years out of date.

Thanks mate this did the trick - much appreciated.
