Hi.
this is a feature request for an actually localised sketchup web version .
and I’m not talking about the non-translated bits, at least for french speakers, it’s pretty transparent (after all, it’s just a question of switching the last two letters)
I’m talking about the fact that the shortcuts don’t work well on a non-US layout.
and I’m talking about the decimal and separators.
so, on a french AZERTY layout, the M
key is nest to the L
key.
on a QWERTY it’s next to N
.
If I want the move tool, I need to press the ?,
key, next to N
. because sketchup, no matter the language it is set to, still thinks I’m using a QWERTY keyboard. this is in firefox, opera, chrome, PC and mac.
same if I want the rotate tool, I have to press A
instead of Q
because off course, it’s flipped.
I can’t even undo action : cmd-z
(on a mac right now) does nothing because Z
is flipped with w
.
but then cmd-w
is seen by the browser as a “close tab / window” action. so no shortcut undo I guess.
“but pierre, can’t you just change the shortcut to the key next to L?” well according to QWERTy, it’s a semicolon. and that brings me to the second issue.
(and I don’t want to start the lessons by “ok, let’s all switch 10 shortcuts so they kinda work now”)
Dear america, most of us use a decimal comma and a semicolon separator in sketchup.
Except in sketchup for web, where it is - since 2019 at least - not the case.
This year I’ve been training more and more people first on the web/go version then later on pro. and it’s a real PITA to have to teach them a rectangle is typed 10.3,2.5
but “oh wait no, now you’re using the grown-up version, it’s 10,3;2,5
”
(earlier today, my french student on a french PC using french interface yet still… US notation)
please make it so it uses the system’s choice. or the browser’s choice. or a language-based choice. or even just… give us the option to pick our system, the way we pick our language and input device.
Besides classes I rarely use the web version. whenever I launch it, it’s like having to use my computer with a left-handed mouse and no characters on my keyboard. I can do it. I really don’t want to.
that’s all.
long day, tired, if anyone reads this and dislikes my tone, it’s a mix of that and french candor. hon hon.
