System: Mac (M1) Sketchup 2026
I have a very complex 3D shop kiosk that was designed in a 3D program like solid works with a file type .STP
I have imported this file into sketchup successfully.
The model is complex with a lot of edges and faces and therefore takes a long time to save.
The model is all grouped on its own layer and components are grouped…this is good.
I have purged the unused materials, Tags, components, styles.
How to make this model simpler so that it is easy to work with?
There are a some ways to optimize your model but well actually need to check it to see what can be done. Have you downloaded models from the 3D warehouse? The materials and textures are from sketchup or you used your own textures downloaded from the World Wide Web?
Yes, that’s why I’m asking if he downloaded or used textures, obviously after having it imported the model. And also ask him if he could share the file so we can check what can be done to help him optimize it.
Unfortunately, importers are not perfect, they almost always create many more edges and faces than they should. Usually, you get the best result if you redo it in Sketchup… (I think that’s what you don’t want… )
However, there are extensions that you can use to achieve more or less reduction of model size edge/face/ complexity.

Also, if you share your model (if it’s large, then via some cloud service, Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive…etc.), then someone can take a look on it.
