Complex Layout Pattern Help

Hey guys! I am working on a bathroom vanity elevation for a client design book, and I am really struggling on how to go about representing the backsplash tile. I am new to SketchUp and LayOut, so I am sorry if I’m overcomplicating things or not making sense!

For another bathroom I did, I was able to find a layout pattern within LayOut that was similar enough to match the tile I had selected for that particular area. However, the tile selected for the bathroom I am working on right now is extremely complex. There are no pattern options similar in LayOut, and I couldn’t find anything online, so I decided to try and make it work myself. I created the pattern in SketchUp, and now I honestly don’t know what to do with it to get it to function like the pattern did in the other elevation I did.

I tried placing the tiles onto the wall in the SketchUp file, but when I sent to LayOut, the tile lines looked so thick due to them being so small and there being so much going on. I am looking for thin lines. I tried changing line thickness in LayOut, which worked for the tiles, but did not work overall because it made my walls too thin.

So then, I tried putting multiple of them together in SketchUp, sent to LayOut, and added a viewport with only the splash tiles on top of the vanity elevation viewport. This got me closer to what I need, but I do not want the tile covering the whole wall—I want to have a triangle fill that covers only a portion of the wall, and is able to be put behind the items such as the vanity mirror.

That led me to thinking I should just create and import my own pattern, but all of the tutorials I am finding online are of patterns that are easy to create in a way that the pattern can be repeated and match up correctly.

Do you have any suggestions on either an easier way to go about this, or how to create a pattern of this tile? I will include the file of the tile I created.

I am including the SketchUp file of the tile I created in SketchUp and the LayOut file of the previous bathroom I did as an example of what I am looking for. Let me know if you need anything else, I was going to include the current LayOut file I have that I am about to give up on, but I could only upload 2 attachments.

I really would appreciate the help

Powder Elevation.layout (13.9 MB)

Do you mean like this?

You should try Curic’s new extension: Curic Face Array

I took your tile pattern and used Face Array – see below:

The best part is that you can adjust the pattern offset and it can trim your pattern to the shape you apply it to but beware that it could potentially bloat your SU file.

Hope this helps!

Hi Paul! Thanks so much for replying. I am wanting the tile on the wall like that, but I want multiple of them put together to use as a hatch pattern, so that I can fill a triangular area similar to the example. I also need to avoid the pattern going over top of the items in the viewport, such as a mirror or a faucet.

Hi, that’s awesome! I actually already did that manually in SketchUp, which took way too long, so that extension would have helped a lot haha! Right now, I have a bunch of the tiles put together, but my issue is that I don’t know the best way to apply to my LayOut elevation. If I add them on top of my elevation viewport that includes mirror, lights, and faucet, the tiles will cover these elements, which I am trying to avoid. If I turned it into a pattern in Layout, it would work exactly how I need it to, but I do not know how to do that.

You need to apply the tile pattern on the wall in your SU model.

I did try that, but when I sent it to layout, the lines were way too thick and I couldn’t figure out a way to change only the line weight of the tiles without affecting the rest of the model.

In LO create a translucent mask over the tile pattern – you may have to play around with the transparency percentage to get the desired look.

Where on that Layout viewport elevation do you want the pattern – in the Layout file you have that triangular area that is tiled.

Do you want the complex pattern there?

Something like this…

Hatching

Yes, that is exactly what I am looking for! How would I go about turning the complex tile into a hatch pattern like that?

The idea uses a SketchUp file as the “hatch pattern” and a clipping mask in Layout.

I created an array of your pattern in SketcUp rather like checksix did with Curic’s Face Array but it creates a SketchUp file with a lot of poly count which causes Layout to be a little slow when manipulating or updating the viewport of the SketchUp pattern file.

Here’s the SketchUp file I created – it’s not precise.

Pattern Tile.skp (658.6 KB)

Insert the SketchUp file into Layout and adjust the viewport scale and line scale as required – I had 1:20 and 0.1pt.

I don’t know if there’s an easier way of doing this like creating an image file from the SketchUp model to use as a pattern fill to a shape in Layout…

You might want to purge the Teddy (person) component from the SketchUp file.

Sorry, I just got off a conference call. So you want something like this:

I tried to quickly create a tiling hatch pattern (from the SU model and exported as a PNG file) but it doesn’t quite line up vertically but I think it conveys what you want to show on your LO drawing. Note that you can also use the PNG file as a texture SU applied to the wall (or wherever the tile is supposed to go).

Attached is the PNG file - note that I scaled the pattern to 0.05x in LO

I had no idea about the create clipping mask option, that is so helpful! I really appreciate you taking your time to help me with this, thank you so much!

Thank you so much, this is perfect! I’m sure down the road I’m am going to come across this same scenario, is there any way you could explain detailed steps on how you created the pattern PNG? I really appreciate you taking your time to help!

Here’s a basic tutorial: Create a repeating tile texture in SketchUp

Once you’ve created your material in SU, in the Materials Panel select the “Edit texture image in external editor” icon
image
Then in your image editor save it as a PNG file. In LO insert the image and you can use it as a Pattern Fill.
