Dave, I really hate wasting your time but when I go to the general "welcome to SketchUP Community "page there are eleven icons across the top and the 7th from the left is the link to “Linkedin”. Not sure if it makes a difference but I am using a MAC.

I hope this helps.
I can see what you’ve got now, anyway.
So on opening, I see this. The box is indeed roughly 96 in. long.
After measuring the edge with the Tape Measure tool (clicking at each end point) and typing 8, Enter and Yes, I get this. I expect it’s what you’re seeing.
And after zooming the camera…
As I said before, you’re working in model space. If you were standing in a position such that you could see an 8 foot long box and someone replaced it with an 8 inch long box, wouldn’t you expect to see something similar? If you want the 8 in. long box to fill your field of view, you’ll need to get closer to it or zoom in.
Now I understand. I was expecting the scale to change when in fact I have to change my perspective. I tried what you described and it worked. I greatly appreciate your patience. Thank you.
Glad it helped.
So going forward, just draw things at their actual dimension making sure you enter the exact dimension as you draw.
By the way, the blue faces on your box should be on the inside. Blue indicates you’re looking at the back side of the faces. You should have white ones facing out.
