Is there a way to create sub layers or folders to hide some of the layers not being used?
no native layer groups but you may want check Didier Burs plugin ‘Layer Manager’ for doing this.
“Layers” in SketchUp are global tags you can assign to objects and doesn’t, as in most programs with layers, define any kind of hierarchy of drawing contexts. That is what Groups and Components do in SketchUp. The Outliner panel is more similar to what the layer panels in e.g. Photoshop is than the layer panel in SketchUp is.
