Can I disable 2025 auto-purge on save completely?

Hi all,

Just upgraded to 2025 from 2024, and noticed that the software auto-purges when the file saves. I’ve unchecked the setting for it to ask me beforehand, but I’d prefer it if it didn’t auto-purge the file altogether. There are various plugins I use to clean/purge the files I work with and have set up templates for certain use cases with layers already created and color coded. I’ve set these to read-only so no one accidentally saves over them, but when I save to a new file, it will auto-purge the layers and make the template useless.

Is there a way to disable the auto-purge completely?

Thanks,

T.

autopurge

Yes, I know that that setting gives me the option to ask before it purges. My question was if I can disable the entire process. My guess is no, based on other posts about this which isn’t ideal, but I guess I’ll work with it.

If you uncheck the box that “Ask to Purge…” , it won’t ask and won’t purge.

Actually the answer is Yes. You can stop SketchUp from purging on Save. Enable the prompt in Preferences. Then when you save and get the prompt, tick the box to prevent it showing and click the No button.

Would this be model to model, and not a blanket setting? i.e. it’ll have to ask on every file and then I have to hide it?

If you tick the box and then select No it’s a one time thing.

Many users seem to need SketchUp to purge unused stuff for them because they don’t do it themselves. Search the forum for replies I’ve made which include the phrase ‘purged unused’. We regularly see SketchUp files that have become unusable because the user has left tens or hundreds of unused components and materials. If you prefer to manage that yourself you can (I choose to do that) but you do have to manage it.

Here’s an example from a file not too long ago.

This automatic purging feature is intended to prevent this kind of bloat.

oh yeah in my line of work we often convert revit files and using Purge All or CleanUp3 I’ve removed billions of elements from models before. I usually clean up other designers’ files as well for handoffs and have to purge or repair things.

I just didn’t want to have to click that setting for each file. If it’ll not ask and not purge - leaving me to do it myself - then that’s solved things.

Thanks
