I’m sure for a lot of people it’s really helpful but I have a 24 core cpu with 32gb of memory and fast gpu’s. Before this function was added, I manually used the function a couple of times within a time span 2 years.
Now it’s automatic - great, I’m sure it’s doing some good in there - but whenever I save manually our close up for the day it ask me “..do you..”, even after I’ve click “…don’t ask again.” emphatically (really hard click and said stop! ) it still does come up every time.
I’m sure it’s a simple fix - I unfortunately upgraded from 2024 to 2025 right in the middle of a job - big no no I know.
Installing SketchUp 2025 doesn’t replace SketchUp 2024 so there’s no reason you couldn’t have continued the project in SketchUp 2024. That’s the whole point of having each major release of SketchUp install as a separate program rather than overwriting the previous version.
Please update your forum profile. It shows you are still using SketchUp 2023.
Thanks for the quick response. But no, I have a single seat and the company gives me nothing but pain when I had two separate version on my workstations at the same time. Upgrading to 2024 was a nightmare and ended only after I deleted the other version. For some reason I couldn’t get any help - should have come here, go figure. I have a rule - delete the other versions lock and barrel before I install the new one.
It looks like you guys got a version migration tool like AutoCAD that I found out about after already deleted 2024. Like I said I’m in the middle of project and I get focused.
So that’s a thing on your company’s end. SketchUp itself makes no requirement that you remove a previous version to install a new one. In fact the recommendation is to not remove an older version until you’ve gotten the new version installed and set up and have gotten to grips with new features.
I’m not sure what you mean by that. There is a migration tool now for extensions that will copy them from your previous version. That works well unless the extensions require a proper installation or you’ve got outdated extensions. In those cases you would need to still install them fresh from their sources with the proper installation method for the extension.
Well my company is me, and I don’t pretend to know everything about Sketchup, but it kept telling me I needed to buy another seat. I’m not sure if that’s what you mean “that’s company’s problem”, or if there’s some other solution I’m not aware of that you would be kind enough to tell me about. I kept trying to unassign the seat and apply it to the other other version but no bueno.
I’m 69 years old and admit I do get cranky but my time with PC’s goes back ms-dos (pre windows), I built my first computer from parts at PC a store. Microsoft’s standard response to any question was something I did wrong, or some standard program I installed. But in spite of that I’m still open to have my mind upgraded with new info so please let me what I’m doing wrong.
I’m telling you that there is no requirement from SketchUp or Trimble to uninstall an older version of SketchUp in order to install a new one. And that it is recommended that you DON’T uninstall the version you’ve been working in until you have installed the newer version and “moved in” as it were. It is also advised for most users that they don’t switch versions in the middle of a project.
My guess is the actual message indicated that you needed to free up a login by signing out of at least one activation of SketchUp. That doesn’t mean uninstalling the program. It just means signing out. You can do that at the bottom of the Help menu. It may be that you also need to log into yout account management portal at Trimble Connect and deauthorize all devices. Under Products and SketchUp click on Manage Devices.
Is there any universal way to switch off this function? It looks like I have to do that procedure for every time I open an existing drawing, which I have literally hundreds of existing drawings. I just open another existing drawing it hitting up to purge again. I looked in the Preference dialogue shows the “purge” check mark on.
Turning off Purge All is a preference setting so it should be active for every model. It’s not a per model thing. If you installed SketchUp correctly you should be able to adjust that setting in Preferences for the current model and save any changes for that model. When you reopen SketchUp the box should automatically be unticked and it should remain that way until you change it again.
When I initially installed SketchUp 2025 I turned that off and it has stuck since then.
So did you install SketchUp 2025 correctly? That requires right clicking on the downloaded installed and selecting Run as administrator. If you didn’t do that Windows may not grant SketchUp the permissions to write the preferences file with your changes.
If you didn’t use Run as administrator, close SketchUp, find the installer in your Downloads folder, right click on it, choose Run as administrator, and then choose the Repair option. After that do a cold reboot of your computer, open SketchUp and make the preference setting and save a SketchUp file. Then close SketchUp and open it again to check to see that the setting has remained.
If needed you can manually edit the Private Preferences file to change True to False. You’ll find that file in User/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2025/SketchUp
By the way, you should be purging your files periodically to get rid of unused stuff and reduce file bloat. If you aren’t going to let SketchUp do it when you save, do it yourself periodically.
