You can try Andreas’ Image Resizer extension:

Note that it require that you have ImageMagick installed on your computer.
You don’t have to down-sample every single image. It’s the largest images that are a problem.
Do the largest first, then Purge and Save and you’ll see the file size become smaller.
Always try to use images 1024 or less.
If you use larger images then be certain you have Use Maximum Texture Size turned OFF
